battery chart

Post by Ron Haraseth » Sat Jan 12, 2013 6:04 pm

I have my auxiliary ports (cig lighter and dedicated dual USB port) off of a relay, but added a switch to bypass the relay to maintain power on the ports when traveling to charge cell phone/MP3 player at night PLUS keep my GPS hot continually so that it will record a track continuously. I usually don't activate it unless I am on an extended trip. I use a single LED voltage monitor: http://www.ebay.com/itm/12v-LED-Battery-Monitor-voltage-and-charge-indicator-/150479033981?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item23093fd67d Which I like very much. Visible in most any light condition. Voltage Output
>15.20 Green/Red alternating (over-voltage) >13.20 Green (charging) >12.45 Amber (75% plus) >12.25 Red slow flash (50% approx) >12.00 Red 2 flashes, repeat >11.80 Red 3 flashes, repeat

I get to a location , like a Rustic campgrounds, or just in the wood's etc, and realize my Phone is about dead, and can NOT charge it. So I think I will at least install a Bypass, for that kind of thing. ($3.+-)

Maybe after an overnight on the charger or after an hour or more ride. Instead of "voltage to %charge" should be possibly be "fully charged voltage to % of rated capacity". Which makes me feel better about my current battery it hasn't had more than 12.4 for the last couple of years. But recently my friend's battery after an hour's ride was showing 11.8 and would not crank his bike. YMMV but if I run the AGM battery--on either the '99 I used to own or the 08 I have--to 11.1 (due to stupidity/abuse on my part) it would start the bike in "typical" conditions. With NAPA 15w50 synthetic in it even. For more fun typical charging voltage for both the '08(65k miles) and '99(32k miles) were right around 14v. Measured with Garmin 276 (attached at the battery terminals, neat display field on the map screen) that I had checked with a digital multimeters. But if I turn my '08 high beam on (stock wiring) it goes _up_ to 14.5, _if_ the battery is fully charged when I do it. If I had run the voltage down to that stupid level it wasn't going to see 14v until more than an hour of running. I typically run it down to high 11's when I am at a campground for a few days and use it to charge the notebook computer and such. It would be charging the battery at ~12v and slowly go up to 14v. I get a little anal after a few push starts when I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have to what I was doing. Hiking days in a state or national parks are murder on my battery's. That and leaving the dang GPS on the bike in the on setting, oops. One of these days I will install a relay to prevent that. Nope to lazy. This was thought to happen because of the lower amp output of the charging systems. Does anyone else remember this or has anyone checked the voltage on their charging system and how would that fit in with this file?
