what year is my klr 650?
According to my insurance and registration, I bought a 2007 model.
But, the manufacturer's decal on the fork says it was made in June 2006.
If you were a collector, would you buy this bike as a 2007?
Did I get skunked?

Take your VIN to your local Kawasaki dealer. They can tell you for sure.
Usually vehicles are made several months before the model year. The manufacture date is not usually the same as the year model.

More often than not, in North America the manufacture date falls in the year before the "model year". With cars, the 2013 models will appear in showrooms in August or September of 2012, which pretty much dictates a manufacture date in 2012 (or earlier). Its much the same with bikes, but less so in some other countries. Some places, the year of manufacture is the key, in others, it is the year in which the vehicle is first registered.

LOOK AT THE 10th DIGIT OF THE VIN.
Code Year
6 = 2006
7 = 2007
Model year encoding
One consistent element of the VIS is the 10th digit, which is required
worldwide to encode the model year of the vehicle. Besides the three letters
that are not allowed in the VIN itself (I, O and Q), the letters U and Z and
the digit 0 are not used for the model year code. Note that the year code is
the model year for the vehicle.
The year 1980 was encoded by some manufacturers, especially General Motors
and Chrysler, as "A" (since the 17-digit VIN wasn't mandatory until 1981,
and the "A" or zero was in the manufacturer's pre-1981 placement in the
VIN), yet Ford and AMC still used a zero for 1980. Subsequent years
increment through the allowed letters, so that "Y" represents the year 2000.
2001 to 2009 are encoded as the digits 1 to 9, and subsequent years are
encoded as "A", "B", "C", etc.
