big bore kit comparison
Hey KLR Owners
My 96 KLR was an oil burner beyound belief. It was so bad I had to put in qt in every 300 miles. I found a Schnitz racing 685 kit on ebay for 225.00 plus shipping. My mechanic Joe Krebs in Houston tore my bike apart and found the head in good condition but all the ring ends were aligned allowing the oil to by pass the rings and get sucked into the combustion chamber.
He had the cylinder bored and installed the new piston..wow what a difference>>
Before the piston change riding on the freeway at 70 was a buzzing, vibrating and numbing ride. Now almost all of the vibration is gone and I can see out of the cheap factory mirrors even. The Schnitz kit was so complete..all instructions printed out for taking the engine apart, instructions for boring etc..This slipper piston is a work of art weighing in around 46 grams lighter than the stock piston.
My engine only had 6900 miles on it as i bought it used. The cylider was in excellent condition, the factory piston looked new with almost no wear. But the ring end issue is common or so I am told. My KLR is a pleasure to ride now. Well worth the money.

OK, the options are 658, 685, 688 and 705. Please send me emails directly with your experience, good, bad and indifferent, with each of these kits. Also please include if you have experience with more than one of the kits listed and where you purchased your kit from.
I will start a comparison file and post all the responses arranged by kit.
Please send direct to me rather than flooding the list and I will make sure everythign gets to the list
