I'm guessing it had to do with the high altitude.
Certainly does . . .
'Typically' commercial aircraft interiors are pressurized to ~ 10,000 feet. As far as the baggage compartments - don't know the specifics, but most likely at a somewhat greater altitude.
NOTE !! NOTE - EXCEPTION . . . LIVE ANIMALS carried as 'baggage' {Dogs, etc.} - same environmental conditions as human passengers {nowhere as comfortable . . but don't get me going on THAT
