klr 650 stolen then found- need advice
Hello Everybody,
My 2007 KLR was stolen and found by the police. The bike is slightly beat up
but overall in a pretty good condition.
Some kid stole it and rode it for 200-300 miles. Looks like he was doing
some wheelies because there are some scratches and the back tire is a bit
worn out.
My question is : how much engine damage can 200-300 miles of reckless
driving cause?
Progressive will give me 400$ less of the full settlement (GREAT!) if i
decide to keep the bike so i kind of want to keep it.
I need to buy a new ignition and hopefully the baby will start.
Please give me any possible advice...
-David

Keep it, and ride it like you stole it! Oh, wait a minute ...
Seriously -- change the oil, check the valves, and ride on.

When my car was stolen, the young lady filled it up with gas. I know I
left the car running on a cold morning trying
to warm it up and ran inside to get coffee and the clerk say's The girl
just took your car dude!

Stand it upright and determine if a safe amount of oil is still in the sight glass. Check to see if you still have a safe amount of coolant in the overflow tank. If those are OK, you should be OK relative to the cylinder / piston interface.
Probably good to check the valves. Drain the oil into a black plastic tub and look for aluminum. Run a magnet around in there to see if fragments of gears are collected (if you don't already have a magnetic drain plug).
New oil & filter. Test run to see if the clutch is smoked. Watch the back fender for oil staining / smoke. Listen for bent valves. Try some other way to secure the KLR from theft.

I agree with Don. If it's got oil and coolant, it should be OK. He
might have been doing burnouts (is this possible?) and so he might have
over-revved it. I have over-revved mine several times, but I don't know
how much "hidden damage" over-revving can do. I KNOW it can break
things, but those breaks are usually apparent immediately and make nasty
noises too.
Start it and listen.

David,
The question is let's assume worst case there is engine damage - is the bike worth $400 as a parts bike? If it is than you have nothing to lose.
safe riding,

Thank you all for the advice. The problem is that the guy changed the ignition and I can't get the bike started. I guess I will buy a new ignition (100$) and give it a shot.
I also forgot to mention that the bike is sitting really low. Th tire almost touches the back wheel. The shock is in place. Did the kid just take out the lowering rings? Is it possible to tell if they are there without taking the bike apart? What else could have caused this?
Thanks for all the advice once again. I have nobody else to ask and have been following this group for about a year and have learned lots of things from everybodys experience.

My guess is that he jumped it and busted something in the back. You can
hope that it's just the spring, but it's probably a mount or worse. If
you can put a jack under it and jack up the frame you'll figure it out,
I bet.

Dave:
There are two "links" or sometimes called "dog bones", because of their shape, that can be seen under the bike where they connect near the end of the shock absorber and the swing arm. He might have changed them but not many people have lowering links sitting around for when they steal that KLR.
Does the shock absorber look OK: not bent, wet from an oil leak, or very little of the shiny metal shaft sticking out the bottom (seems like it is pushed all the way in the shock body), can you bounce on the bike and it makes a thump or does it feel normal? To me, if the links weren't switched out, the shock absorber would be the next place to evaluate.
