It all started on the fwy when the speedo started indicating an increasing speed from 65mph up to 100mph w/o me twisting the throttle. Then the needle got stuck at 80mph when standing still. After futzing with the cable, I discovered it was too long. I clipped it back about 1/4" and all seemed fine. But now it reads fast. About 30mph too fast. Anyone else ever have this problem? How do I fix it short of dropping $175+tax at the Big K? BTW, the odometer works just fine. Thanks, John mailto:the-wongs@...

I don't think it's the cable. You may have some crud stuck in the spinning dish inside the speedo which is adding resistance to the needle's recoil. Try blowing out the dish with "cannned air" (Dust-Off, etc). Whatever you do, don't add any type of lubricant unless there's corrosion (WD-40, then blow it out with canned air). Mark B2 A2 A3

I unscrewed the cable and sprayed a liberal amount of wd-40 up into the center of the cable connector. After a few miles all was fine again. Regards, Kurt Grife

I'm having problems with a cantankerous speedometer, the odometer works fine. Sometimes it works fine, other times the needle will not move at all, sometimes the needle will not return to zero. When the needle will not return to zero, loosening the speedometer drive cable and it will return to zero. I have pulled the speedometer off the bike and it looks fine and will operate OK when driven from an electric drill. Suggestions?

<><><><><> <><><><><> I haven't seen this issue personally but I've read about it twice. Both times the fix was to remove about 1/4" of the inner cable end and reinstall. Maybe test the possibility of this working by loosening the cable and seeing if it works. If it works maybe then grind a little off the end and observe the results. I would first check the speedo drive dn by the front wheel. It is tricky to make sure it is installed correctly. I didn't once. Had to take it apart and hammer a thing flat again and reinstall. My speedo has been indicating much faster than reality. Once after I changed to Mobil 1. Once after I got Premium Pemex gas. But, it is dirt up inside the speedo. J#3

I had similar happen on my '08. Fortunately it was under warranty and they replaced it no cost. Actually had 2 go within a year. Both replaced under warranty. Service tech was also surprised and could not understand how both of them went like they did. First time did not know what was happening. Second time I knew. Problem solved. The speedometer cable was apparently too long, using a cutting wheel on a hand held rotary tool, I cut 2/10 of an inch off the end of the speedometer cable. Works like a champ now. This list is a great resource, with all the collective wisdom on this list, ask a question and someone has already experienced the problem, whatever it may be. Roy Cope
