klr snow chains?
Anybody used them? Can you recommend a quality brand/source?
I already know the advice about leaving the bike at home if the ground is white, so I'm hoping to get specific info from guys who've used them or have friends who use them.
The Staudacher chains look interesting, but it will be a PITA to order via fax from Germany and pay with a European money transfer.
TIA.

Dude -
Stay home and watch Cycles South!
My experience participating in and spectating at the Icycle Derby on New
Years Day, is that things that are hard or sharp enough to provide traction
on ice are going to reduce traction on the pavement. Ever walk on concrete
while wearing cleated shoes? That's what your tires will feel like on
pavement if they have screws, studs, chains etc. If you truly need a
moto-fix while deep in the grasp of winter, than get a dirt bike with
proper studded tires and go ride on a frozen lake. That kind of setup will
give you velcro traction on the ice. Or get a sidecar.

Or get one of these snow bike conversions:

I'll have to admit, these aren't available for a KLR650 and they are a little pricey at $4,300...
But aren't they cool?

Nope but I have used the studs you get from Whitehorse. They worked well in snow on dirt roads but they were squirley on pavement. Its a good thing I only live 1 mile from the forest entrance since I dont think your chances are good if you are out in traffic.
I had them on dual sport tires since knobbies are kind of a mute point once you are on ice. If you are looking for road wear then stay home or you are going to die. Sorry but that is how it is. You can not make bikes be safe on icy roads. Anybody that tells you otherwise just wants to see if you can do it because they havent really tried. If you are looking for off road or un imporved road wear then a cheap pair of kenda 270s with the studs are worth looking into

Waaallll, from all the posts I read, this is a family at-home business and they're not connected to the internet at all, including email. Maybe they're deep in the mountains and can't even get a satellite?

Thanks. I'm pretty well aware of all the safety issues; this is for emergency-only use and not for "normal" riding (although not many would use the word "normal" and "snow riding" in the same sentence!).

That's kinda cool, but pretty extreme on several different levels. In all seriousness, I'm looking for an emergency-only solution that will get me through sections of snow and possibly ice (ye gods, save me!) if necessary.
I bought some extremely cool slip-on Yaxtrax Pro snow/ice cleats for my boots at REI, and although I prefer to go into areas where they're not needed, they really work great. The slip on easily, are lightweight, and fold down into a fairly small package when not in use.
I'm looking for more-or-less the same emergency-only solution for my bike. Don't wanna have to use them, but want to have them available if required.

Very interesting info (although their website layout is pretty sucky). Thanks for sending.
