engine dies when i open throttle

Post by gerhardtdon » Sat Oct 29, 2011 10:57 pm

I have a 2003 KLR650. I ride the bike about 200 miles a year. The engine starts fine and idles OK. The engine dies when I open the throttle. I installed a new battery and spark plug. I get a good spark when I test it with a spark tester. I drained the carb bowl. I have been using Seaform with each fill up. I checked the FAQ section for help but could not find a solution. Does any oner have a recommendation on items I should check next? Thanks Don G.

Any way to tell which alternator is in it without volt/ohmeter and it running? Service manual indicates higher charging system output; only part number change is the rotor. The new power rating is 17 A, 14 V (238 W) @ 7000 rpm; the earlier one was 14 A, 14 V (196 W) @ 8000 rpm (above redline). Or even a higher output military mod? Thanks, J#3

Don, I would remove and clean (or replace) the carb jets.
