From "Surging and Backfiring" to "Slow to Start" I'm making good progress and learning my bike at the same timne. Here are the latest items I'm working; I opened up the left side case and looked up under the rotor. The top half of the doohickey is broken off and the tension spring is gone. The new one will be here about Wednesday. So I'm studying up while I wait gor parts. Besides that I'm going to remove the diaphragm from the petcock, and modify the height of the tank strainer. Lastly, probably after the weather changes I'm going to take a look at the valves. I'll keep posting as I go along so I can get some input as I work. Rick

Thanks for the tip. I haven't had time to look at it yet, but I will. As a side note I was watching the You-Tube video on adjusting the valves and I noticed the guy had some trouble getting the engine to top-dead-center. Would it be okay to remove the spark plug? I noticed he hadn't. It wouldn t hurt but you are not fighting against compression so much as you are fighting against the magnets in the magneto. Thanks gentlemen, I've read the Clymer instructions for the valve check and w/ your infirmation, I'll leave the plug in and clean out the drain hole. I finished installing the doohickey this evening. The project went smoothly thanks to the instructions and videos that are available. When I started the engine it sounded tighter than previously (maybe that's just imagination?). Is that typical? The bike has 25,000 miles on it and I have no idea how long the origianl balancer and spring have been broken. I did note that there was a damaged spot about the size of a nickel to the rubber liner on the inside of the rotor. It might have been caused by broken bits of the balancer and spring but other than that all looked okay. I fished around w/ a wire and never could find anymore than a small part of the spring hook and about a 1/3 section of the arc protion of the balancer is still missing. I'm thinking there's no use in worring about it. I'll give the bike a test drive tomorrow and see how it acts. Next will be the tank mods and the valves...I'm seeing a road trip coming on:) Rick

Rick, If you think you have metal pieces floating around inside your engine, I d recommend using a magnetic drain plug to trap those pieces from getting into places they shouldn t. the panel kit is for hard mounting instrumentation or other equipment in the case. Not needed for a luggage application
