klr coolant

Post by david zawadzki » Thu Jul 28, 2011 4:06 pm

Hello Everyone. So i ve read that regular auto antifreeze is a no no for motorcycles. I called Pep Boys and they dont carry any Moto Specific coolant. Can anybody recommend a brand or what should i use? My baby is almost all out of the coolant and the temperature is not dropping in the east coast anytime soon.. Many thanks, David [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Hi David, From the KLR650 FAQ, "What kind of coolant can I use? Any silicate-free antifreeze mixed with distilled water should be fine. If you want something pre-mixed, Rotella 50/50 will work, and Honda (and others) has a mix available at motorcycle shops. Note that, if you live in a warm climate, you might be better off with 30% anitfreeze; water is a better conductor of heat, and you'll still have adequate high-temp protection." Just be sure the bottle says silicate-free. Most automotive anti-freezes are silicate-free. YOu do not need to run silicate free antifreeze in the KLR or Concours, perhaps no kawasaki requires it, but I can only speak for th Connie and KLR. Kawasaki designed these two machines to run basic old "green" antifreeze. The Silicate free antifreeze comes in to play on some bikes, but not t he KLR. Again, the manual calls for "green" Anti Freeze. The Scriptures read thusly: Chaper 4 Cooling System Page 6 Antifreeze Type: Permenant type antifreeze (soft water and ethylene gylcol plus corrosion aand rust inhiitor chemicals for aluminum engines and radiators). Color: Green Mixed Ratio: Soft Water 50% Coolant 50% Amen From: david zawadzki To: Michael Martin Cc: KLR Group DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2011 5:41 PM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] KLR Coolant Hey Mike, Im not losing cooland but am just low.
