battery life.
Mine was starting to get weak after a couple of years. I replaced it with a nice AGM battery and the difference was night and day.

Ok... So it's about right on the time frame. Thank you.

Aureo--
The short answer: Two years.
My OEM KLR batteries have lasted 4 full years.
Dealers typically tell you, 'two years'.
New battery warranty for a motorcycle application = 30 days!!!! to 6 months (prorated). The manufacture does not have much faith in their product or maybe, not much faith in the operator/end user. Imagine my surprise.
However--
How long a battery COULD last is a function of many things; mostly how well you take care of it.
Did you ever let it completely discharge by leaving the key or parking light on?
uh-oh. minus battery life for you.
Did you ever let the battery fluid go really low?
uh-oh. minus battery life for you!
NEVER let the fluid go below the top of the plates if you can help it!
NOTE: Many have reported less than one year service (guess who did battery maintenance. wink)
I usually get 4 full years, maybe 5 out of the replacement YUSA or WALMART brand batteries if I am 'paying attention' to the battery maintenance.
You MUST check the fluid level (lead-acid battery) approx 1500 miles or every oil change--and that might not be enough. The outside air temp has a lot to do with how fast the water in your acid/mix evaporates. Temps above 90F, you should keep an eagle eye on your battery.
Service your lead-acid battery with distilled water only.
Charge the battery if you can at 1 amp until fully charged.
NOTE: if you have a brand new (lead-acid) battery charge is as well before using it.
Remove the lead acid battery from the bike when temps will be really low OR make sure it is 'topped' off often using a battery tender or such when stored in cold temps. (I now remove my batteries because the temps can reach -40F during the deep winter.)
A poorly charged lead-acid battery will FREEZE (water comes out of the acid when it is discharged, and that water is what freezes.
If your battery is bulged, it has been frozen.
DO NOT PASS GO, replace that battery if it is bulged.
The next catastrophic thing that happens--it blows up; literally.
uh, then guess who get to do more battery maintenance?
Many replace their OEM with a maintenance free battery at about 2x the $$ price of a comparable lead acid battery. Both solutions have their proponents and distractors. = time vs cost.

I am off to buy a new battery and will definately keep my eye on the fluid levels. Thanks for the 411.
