Check the safety switch circuit. Sidestand switch, clutch switch and the relay. but first, check the kill switch. :-) -Jeff Khoury From: "Paul Farley" To: "DSN klr650" DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, March 7, 2011 2:07:31 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] new battery but still won't start I have power to the dash etc. but the starter will not work at all. That damn sidestand switch has gotten me a few times (frozen water, lack of lube, too tight cover) but if the bike is in neutral it should start if both safety switches are locked in the failure mode. Same with the clutch lever switch - should start if in neutral. If the gearbox is not in neutral or if the kill switch isn't in start mode, it won't even "click". So, you have to make sure those two are properly set. If you still don't get a "click", then go through your wiring connections to the starter, to / from starter relay / from the battery / check the fuse. Don R100, A6F

That's exactly why both switches are banned from my bike. That sidestand switch is not only disabled, but removed and mashed into tiny little pieces so it can never ruin anyone else's day. -Jeff Khoury From: "spike55_bmw" To: "DSN KLR650" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, March 7, 2011 2:38:05 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: new battery but still won't start That damn sidestand switch has gotten me a few times (frozen water, lack of lube, too tight cover) but if the bike is in neutral it should start if both safety switches are locked in the failure mode. The clutch switch as well, especially after I killed the bike on a steep grade. The clutch switch never worked right, and it's a B***H trying to find neutral while trying to keep yourself from doing a spectacular slide/roll/crash back down the hill. -Jeff Khoury From: "Jeff Khoury" To: "spike55_bmw" Cc: "DSN KLR650" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, March 7, 2011 3:21:56 PM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Re: new battery but still won't start That's exactly why both switches are banned from my bike. new klr650 432 miles

Post by mark ward » Tue Mar 08, 2011 5:53 am

Maybe it's just ME, but I have had a few times Before KS. switchs I have taken off and only find out in a sharp left, (once on the freeway) OOPS I left the stand down. Since switchs, MORE THEN ONCE, I have started the bike and sat there a copule of minutes and as i released the clutch, the bike stalls, OOOPS! did it again. I have never had a switch issue, but have repaired a few for others on NON-KLR bikes. some just sticky...used WD40, loosened them right up. ME I LIKE THE SAFTY. Mark (W. Mi.)

Can I just unplug it without any problems? Just disconnect the sidestand switch's actuating cable from the switch lever. Closed is the default position, and I've never had a sidestand switch fail yet, but I have had cables get gummed-up/bunched-up, resulting in the lever not returning the switch to the closed position.
