no power at speed

Post by fbeatrous » Wed Sep 22, 2010 9:23 pm

I'm stumped by a problem that I hope someone here can help me with. The bike is a 2003 KLR 650 with 34000 miles. Here are the symptoms. The bike runs fine at low speed, but the power drops off at higher speeds. It pulls to red line in first, stops at 7k in second, 6K in fourth, and won't go past 5K in fifth. No missing or stumbling. It just has no power. At highway speed, opening the throttle from 3/4 to full produces a louder exhaust note, but little or no increase in power. Here's what I've done so far. I pulled the throttle slide and inspected the diaphragm. No holes or tears. Cleaned the air filter. Checked the valve clearances. No adjustment needed. Checked the cam timing. Replaced the spark plug. Dismantled the carb, cleaned all jets and passages, and checked the float level. Checked flow at the petcock. Checked ignition timing. Both wheels spin freely with no brake drag. I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions? Frank

Have you inspected the spark plug cap resistance? Just a wild stab in the dark. eddie

Another stab in the dark but if you have a fuel filter maybe check that.  I know starvation normaly has other symtems but its worth a try.  There could be enough fuel to keep it from missing but not enough to support increase of power in higher gears.    Gary Souderton, Pa.     To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com From: transalp1@... I've heard that a small hole or tear in the carb diaphram can cause these symptoms. From: fbeatrous To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wed, September 22, 2010 7:23:37 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] No power at speed I'm stumped by a problem that I hope someone here can help me with. OK, you have a power issue, not a rev issue. In other words something is limiting the power it can produce or begins restricting the power after a threshold has been reached. In low gear you do not reach the power limit since it doesn't need much to accelerate or you haven't hit the threshold yet. As you go up in gears it becomes more prominent as it requires more power to accelerate or on the way up the threshold is reached causing the issue to begin, possibly even beginning a cascading effect. Does the power continue to drop off such that even first gear isn't viable after the limit is reached? Fuel starvation sounds like the most obvious but it sounds like the engine is revving ok and all the obvious stuff has been checked. I would look at HOW LONG the fuel will flow from the tank at full rate. If the tank vent is plugged it will let fuel flow well at first then will progressively slow down. When you pulled the fuel line it would flow like crazy and you would think it is fine. In this failure mode if you let it continue to flow it might slow down as the vacuum built in the tank. In terms of performance it would start and run ok. As you began pulling away it would go through the fuel in the bowl and the rate at which it could fill the bowl would begin lowering. Eventually you get to a point where it was not getting enough fuel. In this failure mode you might not see the power drain until fuel has been called for at a higher rate for a few moments. Tank vent is the most likely cause in this case although a fuel filter or restriction in the line could cause this as well. Next I would go for a compression check. Rings or valve seats will limit power without limiting revs at low power requirements. Even a failed valve spring or deteriorating cam lobe can act like that. Those are ugly things to think about so lets hope for the tank vent Overly advanced or retarded timing will act like that too but I am not familiar with where the timing mark is picked up so I don't know if it could slip or not Good luck and please keep us informed. I am sorry you are having issues but I love these troubleshooting threads :-) Chris >> No power at speed Posted by: "fbeatrous" fbeatrous@... Your muffler? Maybe something inside has broken and is impeding the flow...? Ed

Has anyone suggested the coil & coil wire yet? If so, sorry for the repeat. If not, swap 'em with a spare or otherwise known good unit. Would an only slightly messed up pickup coil cause issues? I know they can mess with spark. Other than that, the CDI controls timing & spark. Another component I would swap if all else fails. Mech

I had a baffle break loose in my muffler at around 52,000 miles (41,000 miles ago!).  It caused something similar to what you're describing and was replaced under warranty following a lot of fumbling around at the dealership.  Other symptoms: clattering sound sometimes on starting up, more clattering when tapping the muffler with a rubber mallet.  Worth considering. Hope that helps. Mark
