#ygrps-yiv-144148926 p {margin:0;}Speaking of poor KLRs... quite a few motorcycle messengers here in L.A. ride KLRs.  My brother picked up an '09 with 10,000 miles on it for $500.00 that a messenger had bounced of a box truck and ended up under a van.  $1000.00 worth of parts and he was back on the road.  He put about 5,000 miles on it, then a car changed lanes, sideswiped him and ran him into the back of another car at about 40MPH.  We totaled up the parts to fix it again, and it would have been about $2,500.00.  The insurance company totaled it and gave him $4,800.00 for it.  He shed a tear and let it go.  HOWEVER, it did start and run just like new when they came to haul it away. Another messenger stops by from time-to-time and I help him with maintenance on his '09.  It's got nearly 40K Miles on it already, has been down countless times and the last time he brought it to me so I could spoon some used tires on it for him (the ones he had were showing belts), he was over 2 quarts low on oil.  The only thing he noticed was that it "sounded a little funny".  The oil sight glass was stained brown from running hot on too little and probably old oil. I topped it off with some Castrol GTX 20w-50, told him to keep a closer eye on it and sent him on his way. We obsess over our maintenance, giving our steeds nothing but the finest care.  I can, however, testify that KLRs will withstand some serious abuse.  I have seen it first-hand. -Jeff Khoury

I was getting tires mounted at a local Kawi, Suzuki, Ducati dealer and the one salesman wanted me to look at a recent trade-in (thinking I might help him dump it). It was the metallic green w/ silver paint but the rest was all different: 1.) 19" front tire, brace, and a real wide Excel rim laced up to the std hub that was sporting what looked like the mega-EBC rotor; 2.) the rear tire (std 130/80-17) mounted on a real wide Excel rim laced to the Kawi hub; 3.) the seat had been 'zoned' (driver's area & passenage area) and reused the original cover; 4.) The muffler had been gutted and had what looked like a home-made plate and outlet pipe; 5.) it had been dropped on the right-side and the cowling had several fender washer equipped screws holding it on; 6.) 10,500 miles. I asked if any of the stock parts were available since it would have been the only way to increase the value of this science experiment, but none were. I'm still waking up at night in a cold sweat thinking about it - poor KLR. Don R100, A6F (x2)
