I try to measure my oil & gas consumption very carefully. However, careful I am, I occasionally misread something. The only way to accurately to reasonably quantify oil or gas consumption is to look at several consecutive measurements. This way if you're a bit high on one, the next will be a bit low & so on. My A14 KLR at 21K miles consumes oil at approx. 1 fl. Oz. / 100 miles. It has done this consistently since new. I refill with 8 fl. Oz. when the oil level is just visible on my KLR dead level on blocks. Even going to this extreme, variations creep in due to me or how I rode the bike. qt oil consumption in 500 miles sounds high but; 1. What kind riding was involved. 2. How accurate was your measurement? If this is the first check, you may not have been as careful as you might have been. 3. What's the oil? 4. What's the bikes mileage? If new, it may not be broke in yet & where was the exact start level. I would certainly watch it carefully but wouldn't get excited until I had several careful readings to look at. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "el_derrick2001" wrote:

======== Last time I changed my KLR oil I think I overfilled it because on the standard kickstand the sight glass is completely full. OOPS. I thought 2 1/2 quarts would be less than that. Maybe my calibrated pitcher is messed up by my uncalibrated eye. Anyway, I noticed in the 600 miles since that a small bubble appeared at the top of the sight glass with the KLR on a kick stand which has gradually increased in size / oil level gradually dropping. My KLR still runs fine, even when it was overly filled to begin with. So to answer your question, I wouldn't worry. One thing I do, though, is change the oil every 1000 miles. This might be overkill for street riding, but using cheap generic 10W-40 at $4 / gallon, I figure I can afford to change it often and hopefully have a longer lasting motor. Hey all lately i have been burning some oil in my A18 has about 6000 miles on it. Did not start burn intill i went on a trip to NOAB back in april or may cant remeber. I was traveling at highway speeds 70-80 to get their and back i used allmost three quarts of oil.total miles 600 Now its june and i have noticed it smoking some times on start up like its over filled with oil, or when at a stop light sitting thier and give a quick swist of the throtel she will leave a big cloud of smoke then it clears up. I drove about 100 miles the other day and check the oil and she was low had to add a quart to bring her up to level, yes she was full when i left. The next day i took a compression test and she was only at 60psi cold, changed the oil and took it on a 70 mile trip it blew some smoke at a stop light buts thats about it. check the oil and it looked fine. speed was around 60-70 Am i looking at some new rings or is thier any thing i should check next. Plug looks a little sotey but not bad no miss fires runns good. I was running mobile one 15 50 befor the trip, i used 10w40 when i went on the trip and then switched to 20 50 but no luck so my last oil change went back to mobil 1 15w50 Thanks for listing chris

Check your air filter. If it is clogged, it can cause excess vacuum on the crankcase ventilation tube, which in turn sucks up oil spray from the crankcase and pipes it into the combustion chamber. Check the oil drain tube below your bike and see if there's a bunch oil in it. If so, that's probably your problem. Though this one is a long shot... _E

Hope E's right. I'm thinkin valve seals. Got warranty left! 20/50 should improve things. Surely it's not the rings. Keep us posted on this one Ok! Rod,,,,,burnin less oil as time goes on, at nearly 30000 miles, with MotoMan breakin when new --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "ripper197022003" wrote:

Three quarts in 600 miles is excessive. I consider mine a burner and the pattern lately seems to be 4 oz. every 150 miles. However, this has fluctuated in both directions on occassion. As for the accuracy of your compression checks: Are you aware of Kawasaki's automatic compression release (KACR) mechanism? Please keep us posted. I would check the crankcase ventilation/breather system; that's usually a problem when a car starts suddenly using a lot of oil. Maybe something with the piston rings. You might want to try something like Yamaha's "Combustion Chamber Cleaner" and "Ring Free Fuel Additive". The whole thing is kind of severe for such a new bike. Thats a lot of oil. The breather system may be the culprit or some other hose. I'd lok for a loose or disconnected something-not much help here. Smoking on startup can be valve guides but at a stoplight? Sounds more like rings. If I remember right you cannot do a compression check on this engine due to the compression release built into the engine valvetrain. Either way, I'd be looking for some engine work.

my Klr started burning oil almost over nite,? its got 44000km or 30000mi. I did turn the air screw in and it was a little lean for a couple rides, can this do it?
