newbie paint question

Post by scouserl41 » Sun Jun 06, 2010 8:26 am

I've tried searching the list for "painting plastic" but came up empty. Can the plastic be effectively painted? I see messages about seeing bikes with "Cool black paint" what was used? Any special prep? I have the equipment to do the job just need some product leads. Thanks Brian San Diego

Check out the Fusion spray paint at HomeDepot, Lowes. I believe that's the name but there is plastic paint. I used it to paint a plastic crate for my 08 Blue and it came out fantastic. The crate finally gave out after a year or so and didn't trust putting my beloved laptop case in it anymore. Other's can give you tips for prep work which will be the most important part.

Count me in on Krylon "Fusion" paint, too. I bought a fender extension for my Gold Wing and painted it with their semi-gloss black two years ago. It hasn't chipped or flaked at all. eddie

Fusion does NOT like gasoline. Mine was cured for two months, the gas jerk at the local fuel station overfilled my tank and the shiny neat black fusion was dripping into a puddle under the bike. It works GREAT other then that, however. Moral of the story, dont spill gas. It's too 'spensive anyway. -Rich in Newberg, OR

#ygrps-yiv-1980625499 p {margin:0;}After you paint with any over-the-counter paint, you should use an automotive catalyzed clear coat over the top. You can get it at most automotive paint suppliers in a can.  You press the button on the bottom of the can and you have a 24 hour pot life.  It dries nice and shiny, and is more fuel-resistant than commercial paints. Make sure your basecoat is fully cured before applying, otherwise the clear will seal it and it will never fully cure. -Jeff Khoury
