thermo-bob

Post by transalp 1 » Tue Nov 10, 2009 5:53 am

It's a very well constructed by-pass thermostat device that provides more stable running temperatures. The erratic nature of the original cooling design has been suspected of contributing to cylinder bores going oval over time - greatly increasing oil consumption. Google Thermo-Bob and you'll come across some pretty scientific testing of before/after installation. The name ? Well, doohickey was taken and thingamabob was close. Hence Thermo-Bob. Once you see the thing, you'll ignore the goofy name and be surprised at the quality of the gizmo. eddie

I didn't see your pics yet. Yep, it was a pain to fixture up the swing arm in order to drill... even more of a pain to press the bearings in and out. I don't know if it's any easier to ensure the bearings are clean when drilled in-situ or removal. I wanted to check the condition of the needles and clean them thoroughly anyway, so I pulled 'em. For those of you considering the zerk mod: if you do press the bearings out, use a little oil on the way out and for re installation. Also put the bearings in the freezer and warm the housings before reinstalling.
