Go for the sealed for sure, acid leaking onto your frame is not a good
thing. Even if your KLR is one of those rare ones that always manages
to stay upright, KLRs tend to dry out batteries.
The Odyssey PC545 is my favorite. You need to extend the small (14
gage?) white wire with a simple jumper in order to use this battery
since it mounts "sideways" compared to the stock battery. The jumper I
use has a female bullet plug on one end and a male bullet plug on the
other end. You do NOT need the more expensive PC545MJ battery. The MJ
suffix indicates that the battery has metal jacket. The metal jacket is
required as a heat deflector to keep big twin Harleys from cooking the
battery. The battery is not exposed to extreme heat in KLR usage so the
metal jacket is not needed.
Shop around and you can find the PC545 at a reasonable price. Unlike
liquid acid batteries these AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries can be
sent UPS. There is an unused PC545 for sale on Craigslist in Seattle now:
http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/mcy/1455999488.html . Seller has it
listed a a "Harley battery" and as long as you don't educate the seller
that it is a KLR battery as well I suspect that he would take a reduced
price offer.

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> JD, I use a Walmart slosh battery. I've got 3 years on my current battery and will probably replace it next spring. Cost is about $35 and I think they have a environmental fee you have to pay, about $7, which is refunded when you bring them a battery in exchange. I don't seem to have an issue with the Walmart battery boiling out like I did with the stock battery. This is the battery I picked up a few months ago at the dealer for
$70.00 and thought I was being ripped
off. I will try the WallyWorld battery next time.

Walmart batteries are fine for the money, but I do like the Yuasa AGM
battery. My last one lasted almost 5 years, and I never had to worry
about checking the electrolyte levels. I also once left the bike in
the garage for 3 months in the winter without starting it, or keeping
it on a battery charger. The bike started right up when I resumed
riding it.

Hi JD, I like pretty much everyone went through the frequent need for water in the stock battery which to its credit did last 4 years. I replaced it this year with an AGM
type but since the list price in Canada for a Yuasa AGM is around 130.00 I went with a Deka AGM which I believe I paid 88.00 for. After the first summer all is good....have a great weekend...Greg

i need new battery for my 650
I wanted to ride tomorrow so I went out to Wally World and bought the $40 battery.
Hey Jeff... Can you tell me what the 7th fill port is far on top? Just above the 3rd fill hole there is another fill hole & plug.
Thanks to all who responded.

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> JD, I seem to recall my battery had the "extra" port too. I'll make a wild guess that it's got something to do with filling all the cells at the same time. I didn't mess with it as I didn't want to be wrong. : ) If you can give your battery a good charge before you use it that will increase the service life of the battery a significant amount.
