[dsn_klr650] need opinion on a few things with my klr

i found a 1999 klr650 for sale with 1200 miles on it. thinking about purchase i got them down to 2k. any thought or considerations? i have seen the bike it seems to be in new condition unless i missed something. i have had two in the past and though i have opportunities for "better" bikes i cant seem to shake these things. its like a sick addiction to ugly prostitutes!! i would like to buy one and find some tx riders for local trips for now. on the side my best friend has a harley and insists that i get a cruiser, but e tx has back roads like big women have vericose veins. he said i would have to ride behind his group to which i replied..."to pick up the parts??" anyway should i talk these guys down some more?

Where in Texas is this bike? I could use another one. There is a guy in the Fort Worth area that has a 2005 for sale. I sold my well maintained A13 in Fall of 07 for $1500, (then bought an 08). The guy that got it got a good deal and I was happy. Must have been a good deal. DC

The price is not bad, but cheaper is always better, I guess. Better you should spend a little social capital talking those Harley-riding clown friends of yours down off their high horse.

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> sherlowkbownes, Sounds like a fair deal to me. If it's really only got 1,200 smiles on it not much could be broken, worn or loose. Probably needs a little maintenance like tires changed as they'll be hard, oil and filter change and also need a valve adjustment just cause 1,200 smiles is a very good time to check and adjust valves on any KLR. I'm guessing it might also need attention in the air filter area with either a good cleaning and inspection of the filter or maybe replacement. They do need to be replaced every now and then and one that is 10 years old is probably due for replacement. The battery might also need replacing. I suppose a guy could use the above maintenance items as an opportunity to talk them down further but the $2,000 price seems pretty fair for a low mileage bike in good condition. Not much difference between that bike and a 2007 model. If a 2007 model only had 1,200 smiles on it you'd be paying at least $3,500 for it in my neck of the woods. Heck of a best friend you've got there. : ) The KLR will open your riding opportunities by about 75% over what you'll have with a road bike. When someone tells me where I have to ride I don't usually ride with them. I ride my own ride for safety and enjoyment. If I decide I'm willing to ride with someone I want to be part of the group and not a tag a long that has to stay in the back. Sounds like your friend is suggesting you or the KLR isn't good enough for the group. I have had so called friends look down their noses at my KLR and only one rides a Harley. He rides a Low Rider and thinks the way to go on an adventuret ype bike is a Big ass beemer GS. I suppose he believes the ad showing the GS jumping. The ad doesn't show the GS landing (or getting through a mud bog for that matter). The 800 GS looks like a nice bike but it is what 50 lbs. heavier at least than the KLR. Manufacturers listen up, I don't want heavier, I want lighter. Manufacturers listen up, I don't want heavier, I want lighter. I am getting too old to have to lift one of these things off the ground or out of mud. I was at CMC recently and a friend had a KTM 950. Pretty bike but big and heavy plus he said it was a major deal to change the oil. I can do oil and filter on a KLR in what .... 10 minutes. I wish they would update the DR 650 some but not go the route the KLR went on its update. I have (used to have) other friends on ST's, Dr's and Honda XR 650 R's who never had a good thing to say about my KLR. They go through buying numerous bikes while I am still riding my humble KLR (at 51000 miles). Not a bad bike for all around use. I rode it back from Utah to TX at 80 mph the whole way with never a hiccup or complaint as I have done many times before. But manufacturers ....... can ya give me a lower seat height? I'm short. It has been a long time since anyone has commented on the usefulness of the sight glass--or it accuracy, etc We were doing a ride from Maine around the Gulf of St. Lawrense - Quebec, Labrador and Nova Scotia. We were traveling loosley with some Quebecois riders (very nice guys, rode like bats from hell and spoke a funny language!) and one KLR blew the oil site glass as we stopped for lunch. Fortunately our Yankee ingenuity, a US 5 cent piece and some JB Quick got him patched up, but damned if I know how he ever had a sense of how much oil he had in the sump. Or how he got the nickle out. Anyway, I carry a replacement glass and gasket just in case. Yeh, paranoid! The good Boy Scout, always prepared. Don M, going to D2D and Inuvik next week
