backfires at low rpm

Post by gusmhrdl2000 » Wed May 06, 2009 2:52 pm

My 2006 KLR just started backfiring at low rpm, and then the engine dies unless the throttle keeps it high revvvvving at stop signs and red lights. Bike has about 9 K miles did the doo many miles ago. So far installed an new plug (old plug looked good) and added gas treatment/new fuel (not a bad gas issue)... what's next? Think it might be a draphram replacement issue with the carb? Thanks for any good wrench advice. Ridin' in Texas while revving my engine... Gus

Could be the diaphragm, but more likely it will be a clog in the pilot circuit of the carb or a vacuum leak somewhere. I'm thinking dirty carb from sitting over the winter. take the bowl off, clean all the jets and ensure their holes are open using a brass strand or a piece of guitar string. liberally apply carb cleaner after making sure anything rubber is out of the way. contact me if you need more detailed instructions. -Jeff Khoury Astatic Solutions, LLC.

My mate from New Zealand is coming to visit next week and I only have one KLR650. Is there any chance one of you might know of a lonely but roadworthy KLR sitting somewhere in central Oklahoma that I could rent for a few days or trade for one of my other bikes while my friend is here? We're both mature adults on the far north side of 40, and have no interest in getting wild and crazy or doing any offroading. We just want to roll down the 2-lanes to a state park or two and enjoy the May weather for a couple days. I know this is an off-the-wall request, but maybe...just maybe one of you can help me out. backfires at low rpm

Gus, My A19 was popping on deceleration and I had to turn the idle speed screw several turns to get it to idle. Then the next time I started it a couple of weeks later, it wouldn't run unless the "choke" was actuated, and would stall out if I opened the throttle. I removed the tank and loosened the clamps at the carb so I could rotate it and get at the float bowl attachment screws from the right-hand side of the bike. I had to pull some slack in the choke cable to rotate the carb enough. After removing the float bowl and then the pilot jet and the main jet and the needle jet holder, I used a thin wire from a brass brush to poke some crud out of the pilot jet and from one of the cross-drilled holes in the needle jet holder. After I reassembled the bike, I started it. It ran fine. I went for a short ride and found that the idle speed was now 2000 rpm. After adjusting that, the bike ran great and there was no more popping on deceleration.
