new member and about to buy 2008 650!

Post by Darcy Cote » Sat Mar 07, 2009 8:40 pm

Hi there from Vancouver Canada: I have been looking at the 650s for some time and always wanted one. I am looking at one now a 2008 with 18000 km for $4500. Is this a good price? Also I am including a picture. The guy put new tires on it and the rear rim has what looks like three balancing weights. The owner says that is what they are, are they? thanks ---------- [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Hi Darcy, Yes, that looks to be the type of balancing weight that came on my bike. The price seem high for 18000 km, though. I searched on Cycle Trader for 2008 models in the states and dealer listings showed that price area for bikes with less than 1000 miles on them. Maybe prices in Canada aren't as depressed as they are here, though. I don't know the current exchange rate, as I am used to US dollars. But I would say a 2008 bike with that many miles would be about 33% less than a new bike. In this economy, you should be able to get a good deal from a dealer, and a screaming deal from a desperate seller. Jeff A20 In a message dated 3/7/2009 7:30:19 P.M. Howdy Darcy, I'm from Canada so you should listen to me. ;-P Seriously though... I bought a 93 with 18,000 miles on it from a guy in Pennsylvania for $2600-US (not Canadian "Monkey Money" as a friend in Costa Rica informed me it is known). Anyway, I sunk a couple of $1,000 into the bike. It's been fun and I have no regrets. The 2008 looks like a fine deal. you might haggle with the guy using info of the recent recalls posted on this list for the 2008s. You also might get him to throw in some extra stuff like luggage or clothing or a helmet. The latter might even fit! If it's local and you've got the funds and it does look OK. I'd buy it. Go with your gut, too. Does the guy seem like a straight shooter? Best of luck, eh. Jim A5 Hi there from Vancouver Canada: I have been looking at the 650s for some time and always wanted one. The only way you would have to do ANY modification is if one bike was a CA model and the other one wasn't. If they are both the same in terms of emission equipment it will be a straight swap. da Vermonster

I still have a hard time believing a 2008 bike with 18,000km (11,000 miles US) is worth that much. I bought a brand new 2006 KLR for $5199 USD out the door including tax, license, etc. When you factor in the cost of registration and sales tax (if they have that in Canada), and figure the cost of the wear items the bike now needs replacing, as well as depreciation, I am not convinced it is a good deal. Unless there is a lot of farkle on it that you want. How much is a new KLR in Canada? I would take that price, and discount it about 1/3 to get the value of the used bike. Yes, I understand it is only 1 year old, but that is very high miles for a bike. Jeff A20 In a message dated 3/8/2009 10:19:13 A.M. At current exchange rates, that's $3500 USD. That's a bit on the high side, considering the mileage. 1 year old KLRs with less than 5,000 miles are going for $3500 - $4000 depending on where in the USA they are. KLRs shouldn't be hard to find in the Vancouver area. Have you seen any others for sale?
