white "stuff" on the inside of my oil sight window!!!
Hi there
I changed the oil (with filter) in my 2005 KLR last Thursday down in my
basement.
Standard procedure fill>check>start engine>check again>top off>done.
Today (Sunday) I took it out for a spin. After riding a few miles I
checked the oil level and saw that some sort of white stuff had formed
on the inside of the oil sight window. Has anybody an idea of what that
could be? It wasn't there when I filled the bike with oil on Thursday.
I use motorcycle specific motor oil 10W-40. Not synthetic oil. The bike
runs normal. I had thought that it might have been condensation since
it was 30 degrees this morning, but when I try to "wash" it off by
tilting the bike to the right, the white "stuff" remains. I took the
bike out of the basement and the bike sat outside over night. Shouldn't
really matter, I am just trying to give as much info as possible. I
have never seen this in any of my bikes that I owned over the years.
Thanks for any hints on this.

Take your bike for a longer ride and get it good and hot.
That's condensation, and all of our bikes do it - especially
this time of year.
If you look at the oil sight glass at some point during the
first 15-30 minutes, your oil will look milky.
One or two short rides won't do any harm, but make sure
that you ride the bike for at least 30 minutes to fully warm
it up and evaporate that water.

Don't quote me on this, but, I believe the condensation you are seeing is between the sandwiched layers of glass that make up your sight glass. As Mike mentioned... run it for more than a few minutes to really heat the oil.

Check your coolant levels.
If you left your bike outside and your anti freeze was not up to par. It can break internally . That let the oil and the coolant mix causing white foam in the crankcase.
Or it could have been from Condensate (water) in the crankcase mixing with the oil.
Oil change will fix that.

I have been through this exact same thing with my 2005 KLR650. Since many of us KLR riders are so tuff, we ride year round as I do -even in the cold and rain of wintertime here in the Pacific Northwest area of Wa. State. I have a short 7.5 mile each way commute so the bike doesn't get up to its normal operating temperatures in the colder weather. We finally got a little warmer weather here and its gone. You could even put a piece of cardboard over part of your radiator which will raise the engine temp.
Not to worry./ Now if it has a major buildup during the summer-thats another thing.

Hi guys
I did as you all suggested and rode for about 2 hours today. The
white "stuff" a.k.a. condensation is now gone and I can sleep easier.
Thank you all for the suggestions and info

Proof that frequent short trips = severe driving conditions that
relate to how often you should change the oil.
