A couple weeks ago, I was on the receiving end of a hit and run,
after dark in the rain. Not a whole lot of damage to me or the bike,
but there is some. (To both, but I'm healing.)
Since the nameless idiot merged with me from the left, my bike (and
I) went down on the left side, and slid a bit. Fortunately, I was
doing only 35 or so. The handlebars, footpeg, and rear signal
carried most of the weight. However, two things did happen.
First, the radiator took a hit on the side. It's pressed in, such
that it's effectively one row of fins narrower. Now the plastic and
the guard don't attach properly. No leaks, and with the moderate
weather here in NorCal, I don't really expect the slightly reduced
cooling capacity to make much of a difference with my riding style
(commuting).
I do want to *eventually* replace the radiator, but it's not worth
spending the $300 for a new one. So, if anyone knows of a used one
available, or even a place that deals with used KLR parts, I'd
appreciate hearing about it. No rush on replacement.
Also, the handlebar pushed the choke lever into the gas tank and
broke it off. Of course, the part that broke is the switch assembly
housing. I will probably stay with the OEM part on this one.
However, I would like to get the version that has the headlight on/
off switch. I would rewire it to control auxiliary lighting, not the
headlight. Does anyone know where I can get one of these?
BTW, the bike is a '96 KL650-A10.

I also hate multi lane hi ways. But , at times, a necessary evil. I have to go thru Houston, Dallas / Ft Worth and Atlanta areas at times. I float to the less traffic parts of the road. Watch the rear view very much. Try to always have an escape route. I always make sure I have elmuchco gas when entering large cities. I don't wanna get caught in a low gas situation in heavy traffic. Not a problem Jamie, Fred can for sure fix you up on anything you need. So glad you came out okay on your incident. My hit and run put me off bikes for about 5 years due to vertigo caused by the cuncussion. and Totalled my beautiful '82 XV920RH Yamaha. Sigh!. that was over 250,000 miles ago now.
