engine performance

I have been looking around for a used KLR and now have several to check out. I am pretty confident with what to look/watch out for. What I would like to know is the range of values are acceptable or are in within spec for a compression test? After reading this FAQ: http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html#links I realized that doing a compression test may be misleading as the automatic compression release will cause a low reading. So, how is a real and accurate compression test done on the KLR's ??

Why not just buy or make the proper tool? http://www.xs11.com/tips/misc/misc3.shtml It's called a leak down tester. I purchased one off of e-bay for less then $40. HtH, Denis

Hey guys, I am selling my KLR and the out-of-town buyer wants me to do a compression test. I have the meter to do the test but read that the bike has an automatic compression release system that keeps one of the valves open under 600 RPM. Is there any way I can get an accurate number on the compression test? I'm in a hurry to make the sale and want to do it in the morning before I bring it to the shop for the safety.
