is the doo hickey winter or spring work?

I am ready to change my doo hickey, but its snowing and blowing and I won't have clear roads to test my work for 4 or 5 months. Should I wait? Keith Idaho KLR

I have a 1984 R80ST and am thinking about getting a dirt bike as well. I am drawn to the KLRs, but am thinking I'd be better off getting a more dirt capable bike like the Husky 610 or Gas Gas 450. I feel that the KLR won;t do much the R80ST couldne't do in a pinch. I know you guys are biased, but what do you feel?????????????? PS, the reason I am thinking serious dirt bike is I will probably buy a BMW Adventurer next year.

Trust me, If you have a failed doohicky now,You will hear and feel the difference just by starting your engine.Knowing what I know now,I would not have waited for the warranty to expire before doing mine.Just by luck,Mine bike stopped running just before the warranty expired.Doohicky exploded and cut the wire to the pluser inside the left side of the engine.This was all covered under factory warranty.My bike is a 07 with 10,500 at the time.When I went to pick the bike up at the repair shop,Could'nt believe how much better the engine sounded.The bike now runs better then it ever has.Gas mileage went from 45 to 55 mpg.JUST DOO IT, DON'T WAIT hobbhavnklr650 wrote: I am ready to change my doo hickey, but its snowing and blowing and I won't have clear roads to test my work for 4 or 5 months. Now if you're gonna do it outside... well, then maybe wait. If I was doing a doohickey today I'd use the torsion spring instead of the extension spring. Then I'd never have to go back in the engine to check spring tension. Best I can tell by the 15-20K mileage point folks with extension springs should be going back in and checking the spring tension.
