soot on fender - normal - ???
I noticed that my 03' with 12K has some black soot deposits on the
rear fender near the muffler-exhaust. Is that normal? How many of
you all have the same black soot-like discoloration on the rear
plastic caused by the muffler-exhaust ?
The soot is not too bad, but I am wondering if that is symptomatic of
a bigger problem, or normal for the KLR? What causes that soot anyway?
I should add that I only use Chevron fuel; which I am told is the
KLR's fav. juice.
Otherwise, my KLR runs just fine. Man, we KLR riders obsess over our
KLR's to the point of it being a neurosis. Anyway, why the soot?
Thanks,
Eddie (03' - "la poderosa")

Sounds like you need more mud on your fender.
My '06 has a slight soot buildup on my lime green
fender. It started to show early on maybe 4k or so.
Now have 10k. It starts and runs good. Gets good
mileage. I think it's probably normal.

Eddie, You need to add more right rudder, allows the nose to track farther right and put the soot stream further to the right, and not on the fender. Then, what you don't know, you won't know. (Yogi Berri logic) Many a KLR are a sooter-s; mine, the higher the RPM's (above 5.5K), the more it soots--and the more oil it loses also. Is it oil, or is it 'fuel-soot'. shrug. Watch the oil level, and use lower RPMS--and soot no more. (or a least less). revmaaatin.> KLR's to the point of it being a neurosis. Mine had some sooting on it as well, but this was back in the day when it burned a little oil. Now that it doesn't burn oil any longer it seems like the soot mark is fading a bit. Yes, I actually washed the bike on Saturday. It was filthy, just like a good KLR, but it was time to change tires and I don't like working on dirty bikes. After I was done I even used a little vinyl and rubber dressing to make it shine. $0.02...
Did you get an assembly check off sheet from the dealer? You may want to go
over that, check everything.
You might want to check torque on easily accessible stuff... pinch bolts on
the triple trees, header pipe to head, front and rear motor mounts. When you
do the valve adjust you'll have to remove the top mount bolts - check all
motor mounts.
