crank rebuild and main bearings

Post by nigebrooks » Sat Sep 15, 2007 10:44 am

Has anybody had this job done? It mentions you have to buy the crank as a complete assembly on later models, but I have a 1990 tengai which needs new mains. The manual mentions it is possible to remove the camchain sprocket for replacement of the left main bearing. Comments please! Thanks.

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Jeff, My suggestion to improve your fuel economy is to properly adjust the idle mixture (pilot screw). Many folks on the list suggest you should set the screw at 1 3/4 or so from closed. I seem to recall a few folks suggesting 2 1/2 turns out is good. All you get when you open the screw more than needed to get proper idle is burning excessive fuel. Once the throttle is opened more than about 1/4 the idle mixture isn't needed and you can't easily adjust the mixtures for the mid range (needle) or full open (main jet) for proper compensation for an overly rich idle mixture. So at throttle openings of more than about 1/4 with an overly rich idle mixture you are running rich. Well, except for your wallet since you have to buy more fuel. I seem to recall folks telling me California fuel is known to get less bang for the buck than the fuel in most other states. I don't know enough about the fuel in CA but I've heard this from numerous credible to me sources. I get about 53 mpg on my 2003 KLR650 with just over 22,000 smiles on it. That's using 14/46 sprockets on pavement and in the dirt. I use the least expensive fuel I can get without 10% ethanol in it. That's usually 85 octane.
