sealed battery

Post by Peter Alspach » Sun Feb 11, 2001 3:42 pm

Does anyone know of a sealed maintenance free battery for the KLR other than the Westco? The Yuasa site showed no exact match as far as I could tell. -15 F the other night put some serious hurt on the battery. How recoverable is the charge when it has been discharged very low by the cold? Is it possible to recharge after such a low DOD? I'd like to switch to a sealed eventually but if I can get more life out of this one I'd like to save the money. Any advice on good chargers would be appreciated as well. Cold temps should not harm a fully charged battery or cause a discharge condition. Many snowmobilers using electric start in my neck of the woods, temps as low as -40 and batteries lasting for years. Friend of mine proved the point to me a couple of years ago. Two klr's stored in an unheated garage, he left his battery on, I took mine off and stored it in my nice warm basement, come spring my battery was F$%*&D, his worked fine! Steve Pye

I had a sealed Yuasa before I replaced it with a Westco. Can't give you a number or tell you if they still make it. Bogdan

The battery on the KLR I just bought died so I was looking for a battery locally and I found a good option. One can get a sealed AGM battery from Batteries Plus, model number = XTA14AHL-BS. This is supposed to be the replacement for the YUSA number = YTX14AHL-BS. It fit perfectly in my 2006 KLR and was $60, which I think is a solid price for a sealed AGM battery. Just thought I would share my finding with others in case they can use the info. -Barron

last minute trip to ukiah

I have a set of Mefo Explorers from Fred on my bike. I ride pavement and gravel roads with a few easy trails thrown in. I honestly could not believe the difference in handling that the Mefos made. Gravel roads used to have a high pucker factor due to the sand they laughingly call gravel that is getting dumped on our roads here in MN. Now the bike feels solid and planted. Pavement riding is nice as well. I don't think they are any noisier than the stock Dunlops and seem to stick well in the wet as well. So far 1200 miles on the rear and no noticeable signs of wear. I'm pretty happy with it. Ross Lindberg Fertile, MN
