cutting out/dying

Post by Marsha » Sat Sep 08, 2007 9:37 pm

i've ridden my 2001 KLR650 for 5 yrs now with no major trouble, mostly highway/higher speeds. Recently, after riding about 45 min, bike has been cutting out. This has happened on 2 different occasions (over and over, I'm getting better at re-starting it before I come to a standstill). Sucks when you just passed a car and then it cuts out! I read the FAQ's and this sounds like a problem others have had, once fuel tank level is down. I'm confused cuz the FAQ info recommended not installing a fuel filter. My bike definitely has one (I can see it) so I assumed it came that way. Does it? I planned to change the filter, but should I remove it altogether? You can leave off the filter, or put in a new one it really doesn't matter as there is a filter in the fuel tank. The stock set up is a screen on the end of the pick up tube. The problem with them is that you can't see the debris as you can with an external filter. I use one of those little 1/4" filters made for lawn mowers along with the stock set up, sorta like a double condom effect. I do find bits of crap in the external filter at times, so I will continue use. The external is also a great way to quickly diagnose water in the fuel since you will see the line inside where the water and fuel separate. Which may be your problem now. Shane

+1 on replacing the extra fuel filter and I would make sure the one on the petcock, inside the tank is clean too. Another cause of cutting out might be the sidestand interlock switch. It's located under a plastic cover on the left side of the bike and connected to the kick stand with a cable. Some have bypassed it, some have just removed the cable and others just leave it alone.

about. The riding around here is lame and the weather sucks. Today was cold and raining and there is ALOT of traffic with little riding to do. So there is no reason for anyone to visit. SARCASM! The Black Hills are Frickin' awsome. Jeff's description is right on the money. There can not be too many places around that could compare to our climate and riding (over 4,000 miles worth. This is not an exaggeration). I have had MANY days just like Jeff descibed, just not enough of them. I'm working on it though. Jeff, it was great to meet you tonight. I'll be in touch. Looking forward to riding with you. Chris/hayduke
