klr650 : temperature (now thermostat / bypass kits almost done)

Anyone in BC or ALTA know were I can get a set of spare wheels for my y2k klr-650? I know this is a shoot in the dark,but I would really like to have one set with ds(gripsters) tires and one set with off road tires. Wayne

I hate to be the new member that posts a message right off the bat, but I've been looking everywhere for some information on wheel swaps. I looked through the FAQs and searched the message archives. Hopefully I didn't miss anything. I want to switch over to a cast sportbike style wheel. Has anyone done this? I've seen it on some other brand bikes going for that supermotard look. Which is pretty much what I'm looking for. I hate spokes, just not my thing. I had mags on my bmx bikes as a kid as soon I could save up the money.

Rims are going to be expensive if you can find them. Better to just change tires, IMHO. It does not take that much longer once you pull the wheels off. Jim A-15

Thats right. I juist replaced my front tire and it took less than 30 minutes including jacking and removing the wheel. The actual tire change only takes about 15 minutes. The rear is a little tougher but still shouldn't take more than 20 minutes. You get better the more you do it.

I have two sets of wheels for my SuperHawk (for trackdays). I guess it all depends on your needs. For me I got sick of changing rubber all the time (and I have my own tire changer). If you don't, it gets expensive in time and $$$ to have someone else change them. If you liked to rip it up on the street one day (gripsters) and another go on some gnarly single track exploring (D606s) I could see how a second set of rims would be useful. There was a KLR wheel on eBay recently (may still be there) but be very careful with buying via eBay. I got both of my VTR1000 spare wheels there and it was an incredibly frustrating experience of damaged rims and rotors despite what the ads said (and I always asked via e-mail also). Buy using an actual credit card (where you have the threat of a chargeback) is my advice. One rear was so damaged it was visible without even spinning it. Another (double front rotors) arrived wrapped only in a thin later of cardboard with no packing materials. Tony

All, A number of you have been patiently waiting for me to finally fabricate thermostat housing / bypass kits after I built one for testing back in 2005. I ve been promising a complete kit (with parts sized properly from all the testing) for months now and am glad to tell you that we re on track for shipping parts next month (October). The kits help the bike year-round, but are most beneficial in winter so we re making housings now. Even better news: the complete kits should sell for $89 plus shipping. The whole coolant temp subject comes up with some frequency on this list and I tend not to re-hash the subject every time, as anyone who has been here long enough doesn t want to see the link ( www.xanga.com/watt_man , subject #3) every three weeks. But it s time for me to provide an update. When the kits become available, I will send another e-mail to the list. We're getting close. Thanks again for waiting.
