small "top box" for rear rack?
I'm looking for a small to medium-sized top box to mount on the rear rack of
my KLR. I don't want anything huge, as it's just to carry the basics for
local everyday rides - ie, tools, rain gear, cable lock, 1st aid kit, etc.
Right now I've got a fishing tackle box bolted on as a temporary rig, but
I'd like to get something I can easily remove and also with a lower profile.
Any ideas?
Tom

small "top box" for rear rack?
Tom,
I found a small toolbox that fits the rear rack like it was made for it.
It's not removable, but it seems to be a very good size and can be locked
with a small padlock. It holds my registration/insurance papers, a few
tools (even a small pump), a large water bottle, and a very compact
raincoat. It mounts far enough back that it leaves the original KLR toolbox
accessible. It's only about three inches high, so it does not interfere
with swinging your leg over the bike to mount up.
I just drilled holes in the bottom of the toolbox to match the locations of
the existing rear rack bolts, so it was not necessary to modify the stock
rack in any way.
I found it at ToolBoxesDirect.com. It's described as an "Excel 11 Inch Tool
Box".

Think I've found what I'm looking for - it's a small Pelican case - 2050.
Should do the job just fine. Thanks to all. Tom

Don,
One of the USFS pamphlets on "bear ettiquette" put it best. I'll paraphrase
as best I can....
While hiking or biking in back country, you should wear small bells and
carry pepper spray. The bells will alert the bears to your presence and
prevent surprise encounters. In the event that you do have a surprise
encounter, shouting, loud noises, and the pepper spray will deter them from
approach.
You also need to be aware of the type of bear in the area - black bear or
grizzly. One way to tell the difference is by observing their scat. Black
bear scat typically has berrys and other organic material in it. Grizzly
scat, on the other hand, often has small bells in it, and smells of pepper
spray.
