I am having a difficult time removing the cover for the oil filter. It seems like a vacuum is keeping it in place. Does anyone have a suggestion to remove the cover the easy way? Thanks, Peter

Sorry, there is no easy way. It's a pain, that's for sure. Remain patient with it. Resist the temptation to pry with a screwdriver or something. I just have to really grip it and wiggle and wiggle. Putting it back on is pretty much the same pain, but I'm confident you can do it. Good luck! Don+

Kawi has supplied a handy leverage point on the case and tab on the cover for your careful use of a screwdriver. Once you get one side out just a millimeter or so, you can rock it back and forth a bit to finish the job. Never use the screwdriver anywhere else, and use it there only with a light touch. __Arden

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Peter, I think just about everyone has to work on the cover to get it loose. It's important to pull it off evenly as it's a pretty tight fit. Getting one side out 1/16" more than the other will probably lock it in place. I don't think it's a vacuum but I know what you mean. Just keep even pressure on it and it'll come out. I also like to remove the cover while the engine is still warm to hot. Usually when I'm doing an oil and filter change I know it's gonna happen at the end of a ride. As soon as I get the bike into the shop I drop the drain plug and remove the oil filter cover. Seems like this is the easiest way for me. Must disagree ---- can't help it-----. Perhaps it is because of my elephant's touch, but I would not use a screwdriver or any other lever on the oil cover.. I have found that applying pressure with fingers and a little wiggling of the cover is enough to get it off. albatross

You could remove the bolts on the oil filter cover, cold engine, and rev it over 4,000 RPM. That should remove the cover. One downside however, well more than one downside..... I simply twist and wiggle the covers to remove. As Jeff says, having the engine warmed up helps. Regardless, it is best to drain the oil, hot. Make sure that you recognize that I was kidding about starting the engine with the oil filter cover bolts out. If you decide to do this, best to have a big supply of rags and Zorb-All. Hi Norm: I have had some real novel advise to get that darn cover off. I am a bit slow, but I did figure it out on my own. A little C4 worked wonders - the cover came right off (so did the house, from the foundation that is). Unfortunately I am now homeless - but not for long, since the authorities will probably find a place for me. Actually, thanks everyone. The oil job is done and had a nice ride today on my third day of retirement. Peter
