I don't have a manual in front of me to look at but since you have
the clutch cover off the motor and all seems ok from what you
describe a problem I had in the past actually a couple of times with
a couple of old two strokes was the large nut that holds the clutch
basket on coming slightly loose which allowed the basket to move in
and out a little when you pulled in the clutch preventing the clutch
from disengaging..hope this is the case for you as this is and easy
fix. If I remember right there was a tab washer behind this nut on
these bikes that you bend over the flat on the nut like just like on
the countershaft sprocket. On these bikes, one a kawasaki triple and
the other a Can-Am I think this washers was never properly bent over
the nut at the factorywhich allowed the nut to turn. Have a great
