I'm looking to purchase a KLR-650 that has a Supertrap Exhaust and FMF Stage
2 Jet conversion.
Are these of any consequence? Are they going to make the bike noisier and
faster. Is there a real need to have these two mods made? Would you avoid
a bike that had these mods?
Thanks for the help.

question on supertrap exhaus and jets

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> Steve, I suggest the supertrapp is probably worth about a negative $100 and the stage 2 jet kit is worth probably a negative $50. Oh, plus your time to convert back to stock. I'd also check on the air filter. A K&N filter that was used for dirt work would probably scare me away. Now remember that's just my opinion. I like reliable, easy to maintain and quiet. So stock works well for me. If you ride the bike and the noise doesn't bother you and the performance is good with no flat spots and decent fuel economy it may not matter to you. You can probably find a stock muffler for less than $100 on eBay and could probably sell the supertrapp for close to that. A new slide and diaphragm for the carb from Harley is probably about $50. I think you could also get stock jets from Harley for a modest price. That could put the bike back to stock performance. You ask if these mods will make the bike faster and noisier. I'd say yes to noisier with the exhaust. Faster, well, maybe a tad quicker. I'd challenge anyone on this list to ride a stock KLR at 100%. I don't care if it's on paved or not paved surfaces. I don't think folks ride at 100% except on the very rare occasion. And I'm talking straight line included. If you can ride at top speed for an extended time you are endangering yourself and other users of the road or trail. I suggest if someone thinks they are using 100% of the KLR's mediocre power they should try turning the throttle a bit more as it probably still has room to go, brake later and probably shift to a higher gear. And if they are really that good of a rider I'm wondering why they aren't racing professionally and sponsored??? I think if you want to increase the speed of the KLR you probably need to upgrade the suspension and brakes before the engine. Would I avoid a bike with the other than stock exhaust and carb modifications? Not just on those items alone if the engine performs well. But I would adjust the price lower to compensate for them. Just my thoughts. I'm sure others think those mods are a bonus. Given a stock bike and one with the mods you describe, I would choose the stock bike, all other things being equal. If you would have had your requiste fowl with you, this would NOT have
happened! See page 63, para. 6, sec.3, subsec.c. It also states that
de-worming short hair cats is better left to the professional de-wormers.
Something about their long, sinuous, flexible fingers.............

for nothin', ya know! .............
