bike won't stay idling

Post by BradScheirer » Wed May 30, 2007 10:34 am

I bought a 99 klr650 on ebay with 4400 mi. After about riding for 75 mi the bike keeps stalling at idle(seems very rich). Someone did the k&n stage 1 jet kit and it has a supertrap exhaust with maybe 4discs. Any thoughts? Brad

First thing to check is dirty idle jet, this is a small jet (only idles eh!) so is prone to getting clogged by dirt, probably requires removal of carburetor and some disassembly and cleaning.... others may suggest using "seafoam", I have not had any experience with this stuff but there are lots of positive reports... The two most likely causes of poor idle: 1. Clogged idle jet (not enough fuel). Need to clean carb, disassemble and clean the idle jet. The $5 torch tip cleaner works great. See the welding section at Lowes/Home Depot. 2. Float valve stuck (too much fuel). This is often indicated by fuel spilling from the carb overflow hoses. Need to clean carb, especially the float valve. Sometimes, pieces of the selector gasket from the petcock get lodged in the valve, preventing it from closing.

Check your valve clearances, another possible cause of poor idle.

Brad, before you tear anything apart, does it start easy when it's cold? If it won't start cold and won't idle, the intake valves are to tight, been there done that. If it starts cold but won't idle, follow the other advice you already got... GM

So far with the sea foam I think it has gotten better. It seems to be a intermittin problem that is getting farther between flare ups. Crossing my fingers that this works. More later Brad

has anyone installed the dualstar gel seat. - alaska leathers s

I have a sheepskin from Alaska Leathers which fits great, easy to remove and keeps my butt from sweating in the summertime. Reasonable price and quick service. --- blocloc wrote:
