I was really heartened by all the folks who took time to write to me
with their advice about the KLR 650 vs the V-Strom and other bikes. I
thank all of your for your time!
It was a mighty struggle but in the end I have gone for the NEW 2008
KLR650. I believe it is the first one to arrive in the Chicago area.
I have seldom struggled with a decision like this and the imput from
all of you was very helpful.
I am bringing it home tomorrow morning and will look forward to posting
my expereinces in the hope that they may prove helpful to other riders.
Thanks again for your advice.
Cheers
Daniel

Hi Daniel, You are not the first to struggle with the decision. Oddly, there are several on the list, who bought the KLR, never seen one, never sat on one, only on the recommendations or the fine folks you find here at DSN_650. I had seen a BMW, never a KLR, and I bought one 3.5 years ago, with 2005 miles on it off of cycle trader after a college friend looked at it for me. Had to drive 400+ miles one way to get it, but in the fall of 2003, there were not any available in Central KY. That was 18,000 miles ago, and if you could only own one bike (cost, versatility, ease of maintenance, etc) this is it. You are going to love this bike. What are you doing for insurance coverage. It has been suggested, even if you pay cash for the bike, full coverage is a good idea until you have 3m or 1000 miles on the bike. That 3m/1000mile window is the most difficult for you and the bike, as you are learning a lot about each other. Be extra careful on those new tires for the first 100 miles, but you probably know that. After you get the silly grin off your face, tell us what the new bike is like! revmaaatin. whose secret mantra is -- Change the gas often, hummmm, Change the gas often, hummmm. Then you may have time to decide if you want to do the dealer break in or the MotoMan break in: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm I did not know about this before buying mine, so used the factory spec. Historically the group seems pretty close to 50/50 on what is best. I think all would agree that an early oil change is a good idea. Oh, and the dealer may or may not really do the valve check if you have them do the first maintenance. Welcome to the funhouse. -- Doug Herr doug@...
