oil change concern
The last 3 oil changes, I have noticed something strange. I remove the
drain bolt and the oil drains as usual. When I remove the filter cover,
alot of oil flows out, as if the oil can't settle back into the
engine. The beast runs terrific with no strange noises and oil appears
to be passing through the filter (specs of metal on the surface). My
first assumption is that the bypass valve (the doohickey you insert
into the filter) is defective. Any ideas?

As always, narrow end toward engine... the only way it fits.

I'm not sure which way the oil flows but have you ever cleaned your oil screen? I was surprised at the gunk accumulated on mine in less thank 10k miles... Jim> As always, narrow end toward engine... the only way it fits.

Are you able to actuate the valve inside the tube? Use a small
screwdriver to push it. Sometimes they get jammed up.
And, not that this would likely make a difference, but what brand of
filter are you using?
Lastly, when you say oil gushes out, how much are we talking about?
I change my oil with the bike on its sidestand, so that helps keep
the oil inside the filter housing. The filter pulls a little oil
with it when I pull it out, but it's easily absorbed by a paper towel.

Great! I have heard of folks managing to get the tube in backwards, so I wanted to double-check that with you.> As always, narrow end toward engine... the only way it fits.

Yes, I cleaned the screen @ 6700 miles and hoped to never do it again.
Mine was full of factory silicone worms.

Blake,
I was able to activate the valve with a screwdriver last night and
noticed that it hung up now and then. I have a new one on the way.
I've been using "cheap ass" EMGO filters with Rotella synthetic. These
cheapo filters may be clogging and causing the problem.

That's probably a good thing to replace, as you don't want the valve to stick and bypass when it's not necessary. However, I'm not confident that that will fix your concern. I've used a few EMGOs on my bike and haven't noticed any problems; they seem as well-made as any of the other filters out there. -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/blakeblog/> http://sobiloff.typepad.com/klr_adventure/> San Jose, CA (USA) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]> I've been using "cheap ass" EMGO filters with Rotella synthetic. > These > cheapo filters may be clogging and causing the problem.

I guess a quarter cup comes out when the bike is centered.> Lastly, when you say oil gushes out, how much are we talking about? > I change my oil with the bike on its sidestand, so that helps keep > the oil inside the filter housing. Are you using Auto-Rx or LC20?
