the biggest trail closure we will face

Post by arvadageorge » Sun Apr 01, 2007 3:37 pm

The OHV Rule and You The Forest Service has decided that OHV use is a legitimate use in the National Forests. On the surface this sounds like a good thing: but I think it is the biggest land closure that we will ever face. Within a 2 year period (2009) all the trails that are not in the Forest Service inventory will be closed, and the Forest Service has no money and no incentive to add more trails. The Ranger districts are supposed to work with us on getting our trails into their inventory; but that is not happing. The ball is in our court. If we don't get our non-inventory trails into the inventory before the closure date they will be closed. Only inventory trails will be legal. Now to my point. I am taking a lead roll to get a database together of all the non- inventory trails in Colorado. I don't know them all and I can't ride and GPS them all. So I need help: This is up to you. Everyone needs to GPS all the trails that they ride that are not on the travel management map or marked as a legal trail. You can do this. Get a GPS or borrow one; get a GPS literate friend to come along. I will run a class if needed. You can send me your GPS track log of your trail and I will get it into the database. After the rule takes effect in 2009 all trails that are not in the inventory will be illegal The argument that if I don't tell about my secret trails then the Forest Service won't know, and I can say I thought it was open won't work anymore. IF you don't do anything your favorite secret trail will be closed This information sheet is not approved by anyone or groups, other than me.
