Pete, I don't have that info, but I know someone that does. You can get a little closer right away. If the engine is black, it's a '96 or earlier. If it has 2 bolts on the countershaft, it's a '95 or earlier. If it's green, it's 1997 or later. I'll ask the guy that has access to teh numbers and see what he says. all the best, Mike

The engines are black though 1999. The 'green' engine color was first used with the 2000 model A14. His engine is a pre 1996 based on the crankshaft change. Possibly a 1994 or 1995. So you are saying the green engine in my '98 is not original?

Yeah, the motor in my '99 (A13) is the dark green, too, so I'm not sure how accurate the first statement is... -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/> http://sobiloff.typepad.com/klr_adventure/> San Jose, CA (USA)

Actually, the 1990 (and possibly 1989) Tengai has the 'green' (I think it's more of a metallic charcoal) engine. Maybe the Tengai's really is charcoal; I'll compare the two when I get home. Mark

My mistake. The color did change with the 1997 model year. I erred based on the fact that I recently looked at a 1999 KLR which had a black engine (must have been changed or painted). I should have realized that, however, most of the 97-99 KLRs I have seen were coated with mud or dirt. Walt -------------- Original message from "Blake Sobiloff" : --------------

Or was it my "2003" (really an '88 with 2000 and 2003 bodywork) with a black engine? LOL. This is actually something folks should be observing when buying a used KLR if the seller doesn't diclose the discrepancy. Mark

You are correct and I submit these part numbers from buykawasaki.com as proof for your approval as the only difference should be color. I have the DVD, nicely done. It's more of a personal achievment and about the people, than a motorcycle adventure. Yet he did ride there. Pretty interesting to see how he made the fim considering he was on his own. Dave Oregon
