common harness ground connector

Post by Norm Keller » Wed Dec 13, 2006 11:57 pm

Someone asked where the common ground point on the stock KLR harness is located. In case the question wasn't answered, it is a 6 mm eye on the left side of the frame tube under the fuel tank. The connector is bolted under the top mount on the "nerf bar" which protects the radiator overflow tank and holds the horn, right hand tank shroud. That's a lot of detail but wanted to try to ensure that anyone who doesn't know where that connector is located will be able to find it. I spent quite a while looking for it but gave up and went back to wiring my accessory relay and changing the wiring to the ground circuit for the headlight relays, etc. When removing the chassis ground for the headlight relays (located in the triangular space between the frame tubes above the spark plug and wrap tying a new harness I noticed a wire which lead up under the tab bracket which anchors the "nerf bar" to the frame. A wire which runs into a pinch point really jumps out if someone is an experienced tech because a wire in an area likely to be pinched is a big problem waiting to happen. It turns out that the ground wire eye is behind the "nerf bar anchor tab rather than on top, between the bolt and nerf bar. This is an unusual way to ground a connector but Kawi must have a reason. If you don't have the location of the ground in your notes.............. My rewire project is done. The headlights, bar heaters and accessories now turn off when the starter is cranking. A pretty simple project but I had help. My son's rabbit helped out with wiring. He offered to strip wires for me but I drew the line, sometimes you just have to pull your hare out.
