I just got back from testing it out. First on a 45mph surface street,
it maintained 45mph just fine, took my hand off the grip it kept a
steady 45mph. Then at 80mph on the freeway (75mph actual). No problem
at all, worked fine. Someone else had said he couldn't get it to
maintain a speed above 50mph due to not enough vacuum, but the check
valve and vacuum canister combo did just fine. As for the blue wire
for speed sensing, it goes to the '+' terminal on the coil, and the
DIP switches are #1 on and all others off (yep, the 'sensing' switch
is set to 'ECM', not to 'Coil').
There's a few glitches I need to get out of the system. I need to set
the DIP switches for sensitivity to "High Power Vehicle" so that I
don't get an initial jerk when I engage the cruise control (this is
because of the fact that the linkage doesn't provide the recommended
amount of play). The cable seems to have stretched a little during the
test ride and I need to adjust the slack back out of the cable. And I
need to put a resister to ground in the brake sensing circuit so that
I can put my LED brake light module back in (the stock bulb is so
*DIM* compared to the LED module!). And finally, I need to waterproof
everything (!!) and zip tie all the electrics under the front cowling
(where I put a fuse block for all my electrics, ripping all the old
wiring out, thus why it took me so long to wire the thing). But
really, the shock is that you can do this to a KLR in the first place,
nevermind doing it well

I went for a ride up to the mountains today, and after hitting some rough road I noticed a
scraping sound whenever I went over a bump. I stopped around the 7K foot level and saw
that my liscence plate was bent back up under the fender. I leaned on the rear seat and the
bike just dropped down almost to the tire. I cut my ride short and made my way home. (with
a few tail scrapes) My question is: how long or how many miles will a stock rear shock last?
Any suggestions regarding the progessive rear shock or another high quality replacement?
Lastly, how much do you think is a fair price for a new rear shock to be replaced in a shop?
Thanks,
Robin

Changing the lic plate location (up higher) and cutting off the
offending black plastic tire rubber is one of the first modifications
for any KLR owner.
I purchased a replacement OEM shock off of ebay, from the guy who
strips parts from KLR's before they are upgraded for the military. I
think I paid $105+ shipping.
Search around and you'll find lots of info on relocating the license
plate.
Good luck with the rear shock.

I have had one shock blow on my 2003 (A17). It was replaced under warranty. The replacement did not last a week (it would not adjust). They replaced it also. The p.o. had bought an extended warranty, so I benifeted from this. I have since riden this bike off road a few times with no other problems. The shock is easy to change out yourself. I am going to have my spring changed out in the near future, which is much cheaper than the after market shock. There is always two or three stock shocks for sale on ebay for around $100.00.

The shock does not hold the rear-end of the bike up. Something else has
failed or become disassembled. Get help.

The question isn't about your shock, it is how long do you think your license plate will last if
you haven't relocated it to the fender, just beneath rhe taillight? The second question is, how
long will your inner fender last?
With regard to your shock and spring, How much do you weigh? What preload setting do you
use? Have you set your sag? What preload setting do you use to set your sag to about 3"?
What kind of riding do you do? Does the shock leak?
