First let me say that I have not install my sprocket yet, when I asked for input from the folks at TPI, I told them that I had a 16 front, that I did not do much dirt, mostly asphalt, and that I was looking for a 46 or 47 rear, he ( I forgot his name ) said that I was looking for the wrong sprocket, with a 16 front he said that for road I should use a 40 or 41 rear, I got the 40. Here is a ratio chart http://www.sprocketcenter.com/g/4156/gear-ratio-chart.html Stock is 2.87 I am going to change to a 3.00 for a little better low end grunt. Jim

let us know what you think of that combinations when you get it installed. I'm thinking that you will shift less in town and will have less vibration at speed. hal2006

<><><><><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><><><><> Luc, Only you will be able to decide if what you got is right or wrong. For me it is way wrong. But I want grunt for dirt riding. The way to figure out ratios is to divide the front sprocket tooth number into the rear sprocket tooth number. So the stock 15/43 equals 2.866:1. Call this stock gearing. When you changed to a 16/43 you changed to 2.687:1. That's a change of -6.661% from stock gearing. The input I've got from a few friends that have tried the 16/43 combo is it's too tall and robs performance when you need it. Like trying to pass a vehicle and not having the power to move the bike without downshifting. Low speed performance is decreased too as you have to slip the clutch a bunch to keep the engine from stalling. To get performance like you've currently got with the 16/43 but while using a 40 tooth rear it looks like you'll go to a 15 tooth front sprocket. FAST 16/40 = 2.500:1 -12.770% from stock 15/40 = 2.666:1 -6.978% from stock 16/43 = 2.687:1 -6.661% from stock 15/43 = 2.866:1 STOCK 14/40 = 2.857:1 -0.314% from stock 16/46 = 2.875:1 0.314% from stock 13/39 = 3.000:1 4.676% from stock 13/40 = 3.077:1 7.362% from stock 14/46 = 3.285:1 14.619% from stock 13/43 = 3.308:1 15.422% from stock SLOW So you'll have to decide what works well for you. A bit over two years ago Dave Jakeman told me he was using a 13/39 combo. That worked well for him. There can be some advantages to using odd number of teeth sprockets. For one you get more even wear as the side links move one tooth every revolution. I've got about 15,000 smiles using 14/46 and 16/46, even number sprockets, and it works well for me. Pick your poison and live with it for a while. Your 16/40 combination is a 2.5:1 gear ratio, while the 16/47 is a 2.9375 gear ratio. The stock gear ratio (15/43) is is 2.863:1. The first may be a bit too tall for anything but pure freeway riding. The 16/47 is very close to the 15/44 (2.9333) gear ratio that I run on my streetie KLR. For me and my riding situations, it gives me a little more grunt on the tight mountain curves and still doesn't buzz the hell out of my hands on the freeway. You may shift less in town, but you'll be really close to lugging the engine, something that KLR's aren't real fond of. Let us know how the new gearing works for you. hal gainous wrote: let us know what you think of that combinations when you get it installed. Almost as good as from Navy Grey and underway...except tonight, I could not drown (easily).

You may or may not be strange, I can't diagnose by email, but you are right about when to ride, and you're also in good company. DC Luc Legrain wrote:

Dooden, you are killing me (but you are most exactingly correct) Easy, easy, easy, lets not keel-haul the rev. We do have a few uninitiated in the ways of the sea, I said Navy so that it would be easily understood by the non-naughty-t-cal types. I know about chipping paint, needle guns, boiler watches, and 'relative-bearing grease, 3-ft of shore-line, and a pail of steam' and conning an FFG while un-repping. I bet you were the old salt that invented sea-bats and King Neptune's belly. (;~0) Personally, catching a sea bat has to be my favorite maritime prank. revmaaatin. I also know what it is like fly a zip-lip helo-launch off the stern of a CV on a black-night when you are about to choke to death on your anal sphincter. and, I always wanted to use the relief tube while we over flew the Russian trawler, never did though.
