problems starting my klr650 after it's warmed up...

I just got a used klr, 1998, 10400 miles. It runs great, except when it gets warmed up the idle jumps to about 2200 rpm and a couple of times it has gone to 2800-3000 rpm. Any ideas out there? Thanks

The classic symptom of valves that are too tight is that it'll usually start and run OK until it gets hot, and then it'll die and won't re-start until it cools. However, you said your brother adjusted the valves and it didn't help. Hmmmm.... The other common possibility I've heard is that one of the vacuum hoses to the petcock is too close to the cylinder, it softens as it heats up and chokes off the engine. However, it sounds like your problem can happen even before the cylinder sees significant heat. Hmmmm.... I'm wondering if the temperature is a red herring. Have you checked the air cleaner and made sure that it's in good shape? Also, does it ever idle OK? Could the idle adjustment screw have been turned out of adjustment? Otherwise, I'm thinking its a carb thing, not an electrical thing. I'd think a weak spark would prevent the engine from running at higher RPMs, not lower ones like you're experiencing. However, low fuel supply would make it hard to start but possible to keep the engine running with a bunch of throttle. Have you drained the float bowl to see if there's any crud in there? Have you verified good fuel flow through the petcock? Just some other ideas...
