With just over 4400 miles on my stock 06 KLR tires I am probably well
past the point of needing to replace them. The number of choices has me
a bit overwhelmed. Giving my riding style (almost all street) and what
I think I want out of a tire, I've kind of narrowed it down to 5
different tires.
What I am looking for in order of importance....
1 - More street oriented, although I have done pretty good with the
stock one I would like to have something that would give me a little
more confidence traveling through the WV back (paved) roads and also
running 75-80 up the interstates. My off-road adventures have been
pretty limited up to this point.
2 - Longer tread life, I really don't want to replace these again in
only 4400 miles
3 - As much off-roadability as possible keeping in mind the importance
of number 1 & 2. Can't imagine anything killing a fun day of riding
right off the bat like dumping the KLR in my front yard in the grass on
the way out. I enjoy an occasional dirt or gravel road also.
4 - Price, always want to get the best bang for the buck.
The tires I seem to keep coming back to and the ball park price I am
seeing for a set (listed priced low to high),
A - Kenda K761 $100
B - Avon Gripster $145
C - Dunlop D607 $153
D - Pirelli MT90 S/T $180
E - Michelin Anakee $220 (ouch but if they last twice as long as the
others...)
So given my numbers 1-4 above, how would you rate the above tires? And
also is their an obvious good choice that is missing from my list that
would appear to meet my needs/wants?
Thanks, Monty

help me pick out some new tires please
Monty,
I put Kenda K270s on when my OEMs wore out. Got 16000 kms out of the rear (mostly
street - work great just noisy once the center wears flat), and now a new rear on, plus a
front.

I wouldn't recommend K270s on the street for anything approaching
spirited cornering. They'll work leaned over but are not confidence
inspiring and definitely not fun.

My 1-4 list was the same as yours & I got the gripsters & real happy so
far. Pretty limited off road use, but they look like they will not
suck! best, jim.

Just got back from 3 days. An interesting trip I might add. Needless to say
I am very good now at changing flat rear tires... Anyone interested, get the
