street tires ?

Post by Bogdan Swider » Mon Jul 10, 2006 12:00 pm

Looks like a trip to St.Louis might be in the works. I've never run pavement only tires but am thinking of mounting some for this occasion - something economical. I know this has been covered several times but I was not paying attention. The standout web page mentions Kenda Challengers but only for the rear. I think they come in 130 90 17; not the 130 80 17s I've been running. Would the little bit of extra height make a difference ? My ride has been lowered 1 1/2 " What about the front ? Any ideas comments appreciated. Bogdan

The Dunlop 607 TrailMax set that came on my pre-owned '99 seem to be working very well on the street. Can't speak to the mileage yet but they feel stable and grippy. Given my druthers, I'd have something more 50/50 on this bike, but I'll run these until they wear out. Have done some dirt roads and just casual off-roading with no problems, but would be hesitant to get anywhere near sand or wet stuff. street tires ?

My Avon Distanzias have excellent street manners, and are lasting VERY well. I checked out other street-only tires (just after buying these, of course), and Bridgestone Battleaxe's come in our sizes, and are quite affordable (cheap!). If you will be going on this trip, then plan to go back to very off-road capable tires, then street-only tires would probably be the right choice. But if you want to be able to go on street trips, then be able to handle mild to moderate dirt roads on the same tires, there are several good options available (such as the Distanzias) that handle both with ease. street tires ?

I'm using this same tire (installed by the DPO) and can find no detectable wear in the 2000+ miles I've owned the bike. Can't speak to the offroad suitability, since I've not yet had the bike offroad. I know; I'm a disgrace to KLRistas everywhere. Stephen --- stevedyer@... wrote:

Bogdan, Don't forget to take a loot at the Avon Gripster. It lasts well and is mostly for pavement. Bob

My experience is the same as Blake's but my reply isn't as good. Norm [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
