imminent new owner in abq, nm - ortlieb bags and osr racks?

Post by Hedrek » Mon May 29, 2006 8:27 pm

Hola: I should have a new klr in my mitts in the next few days! Was all crazy for the bright green, then learned it might be a limited edition thing, so reviewed the red and silver and decided I really like that best - blood red is the color. A good color for a KiLleR. I ordered some parts already, including the Happy Trails OSR racks. I want soft bags and think the Orliebs are probably better than the KAW panniers, for about the same price. I was wondering if the Orliebs attach OK to the OSR type rack. Either qwick release or strapped down. I also ordered a Pelican case as a tail box but might go with the KAW tail back. It seems pretty well fitted and unobtrusive. I've wasted the whole Memorial Day holiday obsessing about this new bike! No more cars for me. Just the KLR and a Concours. Use what works for you. This is the swiss army knife of motorcycles. DO - Use nylock nuts to secure the Pelican top case. Don't ask why I know to do this other than having the Pelican punt off the top rack at 40mph on a West by gawd Virginia fireroad. Just a couple character scrapes on the Pelican. Pelicans are very durable. Jim

You will need the Happy Trails NW rack for Clip-on Ortlieb Dry Bags http://www.happy-trail.com/productinfo.aspx?productid=18&categoryid=16&startpage=2 http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/QRL-Quick-Release-Latch-Dry-Bag-Saddlebags-p-16157.html They have worked out well for me. The throwover Ortliebs work well with the OSR racks. A buddy uses some webbing and velcro to secure them at the bottom, but this is not really necessary. The clip-on Ortliebs do not work with the OSR.

spark plug choice and jobber wheel bearings....?

Post by guy_scharf » Tue May 30, 2006 1:34 pm

HI it's the newbie guy again... I need to replace my spark plug, what should I get (ie: what is working the best) and can I get that from a car part supply shop (ie: is there a cross over part number that will work in the KLR)? Also I'd like to replace my front and rear bearings with the sealed units from a bearing supply place as they are the same thing and cheaper there. What cross over part number should I give the auto bearing supply folks so they can find them. Also I noticed on the Arrowhead Motorsports web site they sell a rear sealed bearing unit kit that also comes with a sproket hub bearing. Should I do the sproket hub bearing as well and if yes what cross over part number is that...? Thanks for all your help in advance as I live in a remote Canadian town and I don't have the luxery of having access to very many part supply shops so I rely on your advice and suggestions a great deal! Cheers...
