red clay on muffler

Post by Andy Jordan » Tue Apr 25, 2006 7:12 am

Brand new to the group and I just bought a 2002 KLR 650. The guy I bought it from lived on a red clay road and I have managed to get everything clean except the tail pipe. It is coated in it good. It seems to just be cosmetic because bike runs great but it looks "Dirty" because of the RED muffler. Anyone have a suggestion for getting it off. High pressure car wash did not touch it.

red clay on muffler

I have had success getting North Carolina red clay off my muffler by wetting it with a hose and then either using a nylon dish scrub brush or just my fingers to loosen it, followed by water from a hose to wash the loose clay off. Pressure doesn't seem to matter much. The idea is to successively loosen a bit, wash the loose bits off and then loosen a bit more. I've never bothered to get it completely clean because it will just get covered again on the next ride. Mike A18
