nklr opinion wanted on xt 225
Hello, I'm sorry to post something NKLR but i need an expert opinion and
you... yes you are my experts.
I am looking for a bike for the wife. She is a new rider and is wanting
something small, cheap, good for commuting, the occasional highway ride and
to take camping using mountain highways/logging roads/fire roads.
I am going to see a '92 Yamaha Serow XT 225 tomorrow. Seems to fit the
bill but i'm curious about highway performance on a bike with such a small
engine. Will she be able to keep a steady 60 MPH on mountain highways?
Any opinions on the bike and it's performance or any other bike i should
keep my eye out for would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to respond
privately.
Thanks, Dave

Although I have ridden the XT-225, I don't have a lot of experience with it,
but it feels a lot like the Kawasaki 250 Super Sherpa (which I do have). My
wife has no trouble whatsoever keeping up to me on 60 mph roads.

My wife also has a 250 Super Sherpa, she has no problem staying up with me
either. The SS has a 6 speed gearbox and it cruises along just fine at 65
-70 MPH on the freeway. We're usually on the freeway for short distances
though - 10 miles or so to get to a decent set of trails.

A lady friend of mine in North Western Arkansas had one for several
years. She ran all over the ozarks with it following us on R11GS's ,
KLR650's DR350's , etc. She had no problems for short distances but
the seat would kill her on a good long highway run. Great bike as I
rode it mayself for several days of playing up there.
That being said,
I'd probably try to find a used DR 350 S. Probably get one for about
the same price and that's another great bike that will easy run 60 to
65 all day long.

I think it's important to go out and get experience by practicing.
That said...
Go as cheap and low as you can on your first shot. It's better
someone enjoys riding something too small (think over-confidence)
than fearing something too big/hard to handle. I think once you
determine you have a bike that's too small and you've been riding it
for a bit, then it's easier to decide what you REALLY want. Plus
this is an exciting time to go re-shopping. Good luck and enjoy.

Hi there..........I bought my wife a 2006 Yamaha xt 225.For two reasons.
The fit..The new Kawasaki 250 is just to tall for Her and the second reason
is looks......
I researched the a selection of bikes that would work and let Her
choose..........
She liked the looks and that means She enjoys the Bike.
We live at an altitude of 1300' and I can assure you this bike can handle
the highway getting here.
I on the other hand had to shift bake into 5 gear at one point to maintain
60 mph with a strong head wind....But then I weigh about 200 lbs.
She on the other hand has no problems staying in 6 gear...A lot lighter and
shorter.
Off-road........She just loves the handling,,
What can I say....If She is happy all things are VERY GOOD.

Brian,
Well said! Yesterday at the Black Hills KLR Tech Day during lunch break
7 guys were talking bikes. One point that came up was about folks buying
too large a bike as the first bike and then being afraid to ride it and
get experience on it. They also couldn't upgrade cause they already had
the "best". All they can do is add stuff to it to make it look
different. One of the guys has been riding since 1957 or earlier and is
also a MSF Riding Coach or whatever they're called now. He really
thought it was best to buy a smaller bike and then get the excitement of
looking forward to shopping for something different in the future.
Everyone there had started on small bikes and worked their way to larger
bikes. I think one guy only has one bike right now, an XT-350, but all
the rest of the crew have 2-12 bikes.
I'd rather ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.
Best,

The KLR-250, KLX-250, and Super Sherpa 250 are 3 completely different bikes.
The Sherpa has a much lower seat height, same as the XT-225.
The XT-225 is an excellent bike, but, being partial, I think that the Sherpa
is better. Kawasaki elected to not sell it in the USA last year but they
still make it.

The XT is a great little bike for everything you mention, except
perhaps highway use. Two-lane highways at 60 mph will be OK, but not
real comfortable for the long haul. Freeways are rideable, but
there's no reserve power. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one for my wife
if she wanted to ride.
There's also an XT225 Yahoo group you can check into here:
