piaa driving lights

Post by Todd Larson » Thu Mar 30, 2006 5:37 pm

Hello all, With spring in full spring, my mind has been shifting toward motorcycling lately. I was on the DSN group site, looking at some photos, and I became very interested in a photo in the "Econobox KLR Panniers" set. It's a photo of a set of PIAA Driving Lights mounted to the PD nerf bars. Last summer I noticed a BMW, with high visibility, due to its output triangle of light, like this set up would produce. Touratech makes a mounting system for the large BMW's. This spurred my thinking toward the possibility of mounting large driving lights to the PD nerf bar. And someone has already done this, and posted a photo! I'm impressed. This photo got me really excited. I did a search to see if this had been a recent topic of discussion on the list, I didn't find anything. If this was a recent topic, I do apologize. I'm wondering if the person who posted these photos would be so kind as to share their mounting method with me? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot, Todd __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

I say that too! What I could see it looks good, how were they mounted? Must be a clamp of some kind, does it stay tight? Rod

You don't have enough electrical juice to do this on a KLR around town, you maybe OK on the highway if you shut the lights off as your speed drops. You could add a volt meter and as long as the volts stay above say 13.5 Vdc your good to go. JimmieA.

I am running a volt meter. I have an auxillary light setup where I have the left and right lights switched independently. This allows me to run at least one light in around town situations. --- "Jimmie A." wrote:

I'm in south-central PA and it's deer-country too and those deer whistles don't work a damn. I too looked at the pictures and saw the auxillary lights and wondered about it. My idea would be to have them independantly switched with one a driving light and the other a fog light. Fog lights are good around here not only for the fog but to put some light off the side of the road so you can see the glow of deer eyes. I wondered about the electrical requirements too. My old BMW won't charge the battery unless you're over 4000 rpms. Cycles just don't have a lot of juice to spare. Don R100 Airhead # 6696 A6F KLR

a) what are the stock bolts? b) "plated hex headed bolts", plated with what? zinc? Maybe I'm being dense but I see a lot of these "FYI" postings which lack detail. I have USC skid plate waiting to be installed, when I read the original thread I thought about going and getting a set of stainless bolts but being honest, I've not yet looked at the bolts that came with the kit.
