starter switch and brake reservoir mis mounted on klr's!

Post by Guest » Tue Mar 21, 2006 5:37 pm

This weekend I discovered that my Starter switch and Brake reservoir had been mounted transpossed, i.e. brake reservoir inbetween throttle and starter switch. Corrected it and it now makes more sense on the cables as well as the angle of the hand guard and front brake. Plus the right mirror will now show me cars behind, before I had a fine shot of my shoulder! Checked a friends brand new 06 KLR, same problem. Checked at a local KLR dealer and again same problem. Think our friends in Thailand may have assembled a number of new KLR's with resorvior/starter transpossed, unless this is done Stateside? Check yours and let me know, idle minds are curious. So far 100% (3 bikes) were all backwards, probably not statistically significant. You can check correct mount on page 25 of your operators manual. Posted on this on a couple of other boards to get the word out. Jmac 05 KLR 96 Valkyrie

See message 138185. I think the untrained dealer prep associate of the day usually messes-up the A&P. Jim A17

My '06 is incorrect. That explains a few things. My stock r/s handguard couldn't be adjusted correctly. When I changed to aftermarket handguards the brake lever had to be really cut down a lot to fit the guards but the clutch lever didn't seem nearly as "long". At the time I had made the assumption that the bike was assembled correctly. Since then I have found some other things that were not quite right from the factory or dealer. Good job on making that discovery. I had asked around about that about 4 months ago but no one had seen that yet I guess. -Mike

This should be added to the "Dealer screwups" section of the FAQ. Bryan B.

starter switch and brake reservoir mis mounted on klr's!

I'm getting my new KLR in a couple of weeks. While at the Kawasaki dealer today I looked at the '06 on the show room floor and sure enough the reservoir was indeed mounted between the throttle and the starter switch. The brake fluid reservoir mounting bracket adds about 3/4" to the distance between the throttle grip to the starter switch making it a bit of a stretch. I live in Winnipeg, Canada. It does not sound like a coincidence. It does makes you wonder about the quality control at this plant. Rob

I think that this setup is done by the dealer, not the Kawa plant? Might be a good, quick gauge of how competent the mechanics behind the curtain are when you're shopping for a ride. -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)

I think the *****untrained dealer prep associate of the day***** usually does/messes-up the A&P. Please see my message 138185. One would like to think a certifed, professionally trained motorcyle technician, does the A&P with the A&P Manual, A&P Sheet and A&P Check List at hand, but I think that's just wishful thinking in many/most cases. (Has anyone ever properly rec'd a dealer certified A&P Check List when taking delivery of your Kawasaki M/C?) Jim A17

klr650 vs dr650s (long)

Post by Adam » Fri Mar 24, 2006 11:56 am

-I would not have done it any different, I ride with a person with a converted 2001 Triumph tiger. Makes my KLR look like a MXer. I do get the "looks" when I blow through deep sand and pass my buddy on his drz 400 on my 400+ lb KLR. It's a pride thing I guess. -- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Tony Jones" wrote:

-Sorry about the blank post. Anyway I got mine, 20 minutes after I asked for it. I went home (bike on trailer) and did it over again. Adam -- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Jim" wrote:
